Cyclist struck and killed by motorist near Loch Ness in closed road/"traffic free" event

How's that for irony. Killed by a Bimmer, and on a "closed road" event. Which begs the question, is it even possible to stop them killing us?

If you don't want to read it, they haven't yet figured out how a cager got among the cyclists in a "closed road" event.

The occupants of the BMW were unhurt, natch.
Is it even possible? It might help if drivers were held accountable for gross negligence causing death as appears to be the case here.

The article says investigations are ongoing. Would be great if you can keep us updated if/when charges are laid (or not).

I could not care less how they came by the habit, it can put a cyclist's life at risk and needs to be addressed accordingly.

Furthermore, in most of the civilised world, it is the obligation of the overtaking motorist to avoid the overtaken, regardless. And striking another motorist from behind is almost always considered the overtaker's fault, particularly if they are in the same lane.

It is absolutely mental they aren't hanging the bus driver out to dry.

Not really just the way the UK has normalised dangerous driving that kills people as just one of those things, like you've done an oopsie

Whilst they go all man bites dog if a cyclist dares injure a pedestrian in a crash, let alone is involved a collision where the pedestrian dies

Plus we have things like there's a UK YouTube driving instructor, Ashley Neil, who actually believes, and presumably teaches, that it's ok to use the horn behind a cyclist just to let them know you are there, he's a cyclist himself you see so thinks it's ok.

It's not clear to me from what I've read the collision was on the actual event course route, since the road closure following it for the investigation would have seriously impacted the running of the event. And the organisers keep mentioning it was adjacent to the event area, so like a feed stop ? Or the start/finish ?

As yes there would absolutely be questions about how the driver got on the route, though I've witnessed first hand on closed road events like this, some drivers get very aggressive with route marshalls, who are either volunteering, or not paid enough to deal with that kind of abuse, and motorists will motor regardless. Kind of why closed road events have collapsed in the UK as a thing, no matter how many precautions or mitigations you take there will always be at least one driver who believes their right to drive outweighs everybody else's rights to be safe

Life imprisonment for riders who kill pedestrians under ‘dangerous cycling’ law “unlikely to improve road safety”, claims expert

Josh Hughes, Partner in the Complex Injury Team at specialist law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp, told GB News (link is external) that while it was “difficult to sustain” an argument against updating the legislation, safety for pedestrians could be vastly improved by focusing on more “conventional collisions”, that is between speeding motorists and vulnerable road users.

He said: “Where reckless cycling occurs, leading to death or serious injury, that person should not be treated unduly favourably by virtue of outdated laws.”

“We are, however, talking about a tiny fraction of road traffic offences in comparison to conventional collisions between motorised vehicles and pedestrians, where greater focus ought to lie.

“It remains the case that the overwhelming risk to vulnerable road users, as demonstrated by the UK’s road safety statistics, are speeding motorised vehicles.”

All is full of sound and fury and signifies nothing if they don't get serious about giving appropriately weighty punishments to motorists who drive into cyclists through sheer carelessness and disregard of human life.

"Huge public health benefits to more children walking and cycling": Oxford's low-traffic neighbourhoods defended after criticism of controversial scheme's £4m cost

..."The government says that road traffic collisions cost the UK economy around £34bn per year," she explained. "This is not only a huge financial number, but also underplays the human and emotional costs of people being maimed and killed.

"Given we know that LTNs can reduce pedestrian injuries by 85 per cent (link is external) — and that 22,000 people live in Oxford's LTNs — I think that just £55k per year represents good value for money. Additionally, there are huge public health benefits from cleaner air and more children walking and cycling."...

..."In Cowley alone, the LTNs save eight casualties a year, saving over £168,000 in lost work, medical, police and insurance costs. In addition, more than ten thousand people benefit from cleaner air and reduced noise, reducing physical and mental health problems, and safer streets for their families."...

Robin Tucker, spokesperson for Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel (CoHSAT) added: "The £4m Active Travel Tranche 2 funding delivered projects that benefit people's health, safety and mobility in Oxford, Bicester and Witney – all for a fraction of the cost of a road scheme like the £35 million Lodge Hill slip roads.

Safety concerns main issue stopping adults from cycling – survey

Safety concerns are the main barrier preventing more Irish people from cycling, according to a survey...

...The research found that 56 per cent of adults in Ireland said safety concerns have stopped them from cycling, with women being over 25% more likely than men to cite safety concerns as a barrier (62 per cent vs 49 per cent).

When asked what changes would encourage them or others to cycle more, safer roads and improved driver–cyclist etiquette emerged as the top priority (56 per cent)....

As Cycling And Walking Deaths Surge, Safety Experts Urge ‘Bold Action’

"At least one pedestrian or cyclist is killed on the world’s roads every 2 minutes." — Dr. Etienne Krug, World Health Organization

Every year, nearly 1.2 million people globally lose their lives on the roads, and as many as 50 million more are seriously injured. More than 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists – in the European region alone, cyclist deaths surged by 50% – but only 0.2% of the roads worldwide are equipped with cycle lanes, and many communities around the world lack basic safety infrastructure like sidewalks or pedestrian crossings...

...Dr. Krug:. At least one pedestrian or cyclist is killed on the world’s roads every 2 minutes. More than a quarter (26%) of the 1.2 million annual road traffic deaths occur among people moving by foot (21%) or bicycle (5%), yet 80% of the world’s roads don’t meet pedestrian safety standards and less than 1% have cycle lanes....
