This is the view of one of the people who were playing against France when they were apparently all on amphetamines.

During the match Shelford had four teeth knocked out and a gash to his scrotum leaving a testicle hanging free, but he had the wound stiched up and carried on playing:

Wayne (Buck) Shelford.....widely regarded as one of the hardest, toughest guys to wear the All Black jersey!

If he was playing now though he would be normal. Rugby is ridiculous now though, the physiques are grotesque.

A couple of years back I stayed in the same hotel as the England Knights (U25 step up team), thought I had accidentally strayed into a bodybuilding convention.

UK Anti-Doping chief worried by teenage steroid abuse and rugby cases

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/mar/13/uk-anti-doping-chief-worried-by-teenage-steroid-abuse-and-rugby

Of the last 15 doping violations punished by Ukad, 13 have been rugby union or league players. There are at least 50 current doping bans, of which 28 are being served by British rugby players from either discipline – including Sam Chalmers, the son of former Scotland and Lions fly-half Craig, who tested positive for two anabolic steroids at a Scotland Under-20 training session in May 2013.

Phil Robinson an analyst for Northampton Saints and part time casual player gets 2 year ban (2014 Code applies) for cocaine metabolites. He subbed in to help out the reserves at short notice and got pulled for a random test. He admitted the violation and waived the B sample.

A good portion of the decision revolves around if he can carry on in his role as an analyst

Bottom line: it does affect his employment in his role as an analyst.

Does anyone really have to even think there is any chance of there not being serious drug use in top level rugby.

Either the rugby players in todays game have come from a different branch of the human species which is evolving at 3 times the rate of normal humans or they are getting some serious help

The french prop who scored a try on saturday after he sprinted alongside his winger and was the support for the pass as the winger was only just brought down by an england back, is thought of as normal these days.

When I lived in teddington we used to have all the overseas teams come and stay and train at the lensbury club I was a member of. They throw around weights that are the same as I way for 30 mins then go onto the outdoor field and start knocking out Usain Bolt type sprints and that was the entire team whether it was the pumas the springboks the all blacks or anyone else.

It is rampant and coincides exactly with the transition to the professional game and the introduction of money

Top level rugby is clearly a dopers paradise. Its why I have pretty much stopped watching. Like I stopped watching cycling in the Lance era.

Professionalism certainly accelerated the use, but I don't think it was a hard cutoff, more of a gradually accelerating increase in use, then a step change somewhat later.

Release:
UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has today confirmed that rugby union player Oliver Bilton (21) has been suspended from all sport for two years following an anti-doping rule violation.

Mr Bilton, who plays for Cardiff Met RFC, a university team in the Welsh Rugby Union National Championships and BUCS Premier South League, tested positive for Oxandrolone and metabolite Epioxandrolone, an exogenous anabolic androgenic steroid. The positive finding followed an in-competition test on 13 December 2014 after a SWALEC Championship match between Cardiff Met RFC and Narbeth RFC.

Mr Bilton, who is studying Sport and Exercise Science at Cardiff Metropolian University, claims to have ingested the Prohibited Substances through his use of sports supplements.

The player is banned from all competition from 13 December 2014 midnight on 12 December 2016. The full written decision can be found under current rule violations.

UKAD’s Chief Executive Nicole Sapstead said:

“Oliver Bilton’s case highlights that supplements that have not been batch tested are a huge risk to an athlete’s future as jeopardised his playing career and potentially his working career in sport as well.

“We work closely with BUCS and the WRU, to ensure athletes are aware of the risks of using supplements and to help them make the right choices.

2 years backdated to the date of sample collection. About the best possible result for the athlete was obtained.

As an aside I was back in the UK for a couple of weeks.

Got the chance to watch some Super 12 rugby.
It was awful to watch, and if its the example of drug fueled rugby we can expect from the world cup, I'll not bother with that either.

20 year old rugby league player banned for 4 years for Stanazalol.

Spencer-Tonks (20), who plays for Gloucestershire All Golds in Kingstone Press League One, tested positive for metabolites of the exogenous anabolic androgenic steroid, stanozolol, following an out-of-competition test on 17 February 2015.

After a brief delay, he admitted the presence and the charge. Standard 4 year ban.
