Basically, in long and/or hard classics, Sagan isn't a sprinter. He simply doesn't have that extra kick. He also isn't a strongman like Cancellara. He can't power away 30 K from the finish and expect to win. He needs to measure his efforts better...kinda like he did at the worlds.

funny how Sagan and Kwiat were fighting for the wins during their junior years and now they do the same thing as pros...great riders and a great rivalry

Can't help but think Sagan lacks a bit of mental strength too after all these 2nd places

Even the way he stirred his bike in some last corners showed that it has started to get deep into his head.

He looked soooo nervous in that last 2km, doing really short turns and hoping Kwiat didn't attack every time he flicked his elbow

I am quite sure Sagan would have easily won this just sitting in the group and folowing th moves.

He is not cancelara. He will never be. Somebody should tell him to stop start atacking before 10km line.
Cancellara had a fraction of Sagan's Palmares and performances at the same age. People forget that.

Still, there's something wrong with Peter, mentally.

I think the only one who will be able to stay with Cancellara next weekend will be Sagan but it looks like Cancellara could ride backwards and still beat Sagan in a 1 on 1 sprint.

You're right. I completely forgot about him because he didnt race today (did he abandon?) but yes he is probably the biggest threat for Spartacus.

I think Kwiato surely has to be one of the biggest favourites for Flanders now! Damn nice race.
However in this case I disagree. Kwiat looked as if he was suffering on the Kwaremont and made the attack on a not cobbled climb which just suits him better (I still see him as a rider for the Ardennes classics, not for the cobbles). He surely isnt an outsider anymore but in the Ronde when everything will be decided on the Paterberg and the Kwaremont there are still many riders who I would expect better than him.

GVA didn't start - illness. Will be starting on sunday at GW though.

Impressed with Stannard's 3rd too, super disappointed with Kristoff. Just didn't have it today

Kwiatkowski is a great bike racer. He'll find his way onto a normal team soon.

Yeah, because his new team handicapped him so badly. Two biggest races of the season or him (so far), and you have suicide attack on fastest Poggio ever ridden (although he had decent chance in the sprint), and now amazing 30km ride with another world champion......

Sagan looked mighty, even putting the hurt in kwiat before, but he is consistently murdered in the final kick. Strade, San Remo, Tirreno, e3...

It's not like he is weak. He's always there against different riders. Me thinks that it is something like Pinot and descents.

I still remember Peter's win against Greipel in that tour. I can't believe that he's so much worse today.

He put the hurt on Kwiatkoski only on the hill, if he put any hurt on at all.

I say the opposite of what most people here are saying: he is physically weak, but mentally strong. He attacks because he knows he should tactically, and has a hard headedness about it that puts the self evaluation of his energy aside. He executes the race with supreme self confidence, ignoring the fact that he doesn't actually have the strength. In doing so, he gets himself in the right position, but just can't hide at the finish, when his energy is all gone.

I don't like having to say "If you've raced then you know what I'm talking about", but I think a lot will know what I'm talking about. That situation when you're not in great form, but convince yourself you're king of the world. Your head is in the right place, so you attack when you should, and ignore the fact that you can't sustain it. During the race, you may be able to execute decisively, but are always found out by the end.

I hope that made sense

Who knows. He was still the only one capable of holding to to Sagan there, Stybar and Trentin tried but couldn't, while the rest didn't even bother. It had obviously been different had Styby and Canc not had mechanicals, surely at least Canc would be able to follow after his display today.

It's all guess work, lets wait and see what the bookies think about Flanders.

On the other hand it is Kwiatkowski's first cobbled race this year so maybe it's natural he wasn't quite at his best on them yet.

Riders who peak early also have a tendency to burn out early too.

Sagan has to take his opportunities to when in his peak.

It won't be a long reign at the top.

??? Fastest Poggio since 2008, but certainly not the fastest ever

just a little strategy - implanting to the peloton the irressistible pavlovian reflex: go attacking with me, I do the work, you win (may work in the monument, esp. Flanders)

WTF was that...It looked like the Olympics, with Kwiat as Vino. And once he lost the wheel, I bet "here we go again" thoughts came to Sagan's mind.

Bravo Kwiat. Well deserved. And bravo Cance too: what an effort coming back. EQS  .

I still think that the fact that it was a race on an unfamiliar course with unusual teams made Sagan's attack worked in perfection, that nobody went with him, and he always looked fine soloing. When it's one on one or a very small group, the nervousness is sometimes too obvious.

Sagan looks miserable

Sagan looks awesome and in great shape. Run away from such a group in such a race and finish 30 km break is oposite of miserable.

Kwiatko is much better TTist then him and no wonder that Sagan was dry at the end. He always is after the long break.

I meant his demeanor after the finish. Not all smiles like usually.

His form looks great indeed. His engine looks better than ever.

If he's still all smiles after this one following all these results, something's definitely wrong with him, mentally.

The problem is the following. How likely is it that he can finish the RVV or PR alone? Even if he would be stronger than Cancellara on the Kwaremont/Paterberg (which is rather unlikely btw), he would probably need half a minute after these two climbs or Cancellara will still catch him. And its not only Cancellara, Sagan just isnt such a good TTer and if there is a small group behind him he will always be caught. He seems to be the perfect rider for cobbles classics but if you look at it more closely you notice that "great on the cobbles but not a good TTer and a horrible sprint after a hard race" is a pretty useless combo. It can work in a race like the WC last year where he only had a few kilometers to go after his attack but in a monument he probably needs to become better if he wants to win.
