It's certainly possible, but I'm not sure if I'd fancy his chances too much on a somewhat longer course against the likes of Millar.

its unlikely but it can happen. his form is REALLY good.

does phinney only specialise in prologues? im sure he can do others as he develops his sprinting and his cobbled classics.

It certainly is. You have to go quite a way down the classification to find a gap as big as the jump from him to 2nd place. That's a really very good performance in a Prologue.

It will certainly be reassuring to BMC management, given that their star prospect hadn't really done too much this year.

Phinney can be a force on cobbles and sprints as well yes. He showed that at the u23 level already

yup too bad he wasnt able to show it this year. he will probably get some minor top 10s in the sprint stages.

Yeah its kinda crazy. yea wasnt really much of his fault though, he could have done something in the spring.

Yes, normally when you see a guy walloping the field in a prologue with a field this good, you'd expect him to have been at least in contention for most very short time trials over a swathe of the year.

Presumably BMC will be pleased on the one hand that he's demonstrated that he's not just hype, but on the other hand will be wondering how come he never got the finger out before. Lets hope he stays injury free and motivated for a long stretch now.

He had bad form all year until austria. And there wasnt much opportunity for him to show his prowess in prologues, only in romandie where he did pretty well with mediocre form.

Cool ride by Phinney!

And I might've basically told Millar to stop so he wouldn't beat Alex' time... :p
Not that he listened!

Yes it was, most of it he even admitted himself. He tried to live the rockstar life without training hard. Then overtrained to get back into shape got injured.

I'm sure that today's result will spur Cyclingnews into producing another deluge of trivial and pointless Phinney articles.

To be fair, it makes business sense for an English language cycling outlet to prominently cover a win by the most highly touted American prospect. If this was a French site, we'd all be rolling our eyes at yet another profile of Pierre Rolland.

But Rolland actually achieved something huge in the Tour by winning on Alpe d'Huez and being one of the top 5/6 climbers most of the race...

Phinney has won a prologue in the ENECO Tour.
See the contrast

Sure, but I suspect that by this stage French cycling fans know what colour underwear Rolland wears, what his favourite subject at school was and how old he was when his balls dropped. Phinney hype will be less, just as his achievements are less.

The answer is not to read those articles!

Phinney was hurt the whole beginning of the year. By the time he was healthy everyone else was close to peaking. He was totally shelled in the US champs TT and ToC.

This could be the front end of his good form. Plus he us only 20.
