Italy have failed at easy hurdles so many times before - draw to NZ, loss to Slovenia was it, failing in group with Sweeden Denmark and Bulgaria, i can see them failing again here.

If Spain and Croatia draw (which going by Sweeden denmark arrangment 2004, they might), Italy will have to beat Croatia by 2-0 and depending on score of draw, it would be safer to win by 3.

Unfortunately under UEFA rules the first tie breaker is goal difference of the tied teams between the matches played with themselves and the second tie breaker is the no of goals scored by the teams in the matches played with themselves.
So if Spain draw 2-2 with Croatia and Italy beat Ireland even by 5 goals, still Spain and Croatia will go through because both Spain and Croatia would have scored 3 goals in the matches played between Spain, Italy and Croatia while Italy have only 2.( 1 against Croatia and 1 against Spain)

A similar fate awaits Germany if they lose to the Danes 0-1 or 1-2 and if the Portuguese beat the Dutch.

I understand that it has been brought to eliminate the advantage of a team scoring bucket loads of goals against a weak team , but I feel it's easier to fix matches under the current system.

Man, if this happens again 8 years later Italians have the right to be very ****ed off...

I have to say some of the criticism of Trap over here is a joke. We were a laughing stock before he took over. We were getting hammerred by Cyprus and it look us to get a last minute winner to get a win against the minnows San Marino. That is the kind of shambles Trap took over from Steve Staunton.

For crying out loud we would of qualified for the last World Cup only for Henry's handball. Trap has brought a professionalism and he has inferior players to work with compared to days of Jack Charlton and Mick McCarthy when we qualified for major tournaments. As Liam Brady said, it is a media agenda who want to criticise Trap now. It is a disgrace. We don't have the quality and people need to get that in to their heads quickly over here. People should be delighted we were here in the first place as I thought even as good as Trap was we would never qualify for a major tournament because of the lack of quality of players we have.

BTW the Irish fans were fantastic last night. They represented the country brilliantly.

He's done a great job with them. People are just being unrealistic expecting more. Ireland qualifying from that group would have been a miracle.

Thanks for the explanation, was struggling with that one myself :)

It is very simple. I have full confidence they'll pull this off. It's as easy as Robert Gesinks Tour victory this year.

:p

Yeah, and Robin Haase will win Wimbledon for sure, before the Dutch win the overall medal classification at the olympics, capturing more than 50 gold medals:rolleyes:

Do they at least have penalties if 2 sides are even after playing the 3rd match, like they did last year?
