Have you perhaps seen the last time we played Russia? It wasn't pretty.

Roll right back at ya

You guys had pretty much the same team on the pitch as this time, correct?

No, back then we had a different system with Van Basten. Much more offensive-minded. Only 1 controleur (but no Van Bommel or de Jong type) and 2 offensive midfielders. And the controller was a football playing type under Van Basten.

It was the more classic 4-3-3 / dutch total football system. We crushed France and Italy with it but Russia was much more clever and out played us.
Now the system is different but the players have become..worse

Not sure if the players are worse.

Sniejder and RVP are better players now, Huntelaar too.

The defense is bad, but it was then to. Van Bommel and De Jong hardly work.

Anyway the team are clearly in conflict to, you can see it on the field. This game went to tatters quickly. Even if we somehow make it thru (which I highly doubt) the team (if one would call it that -- bunch of individuals) is in no state to progress very far here.

We definitely need a new coach, new structure and need to re-build.

OK, thanks for explanation.

Unlike wine, football players don't get better with age - big problem for Russia as well - the team is old....

Poland can give Russia a game but Netherlands can't? Even though we rode our luck we drew with them in Moscow 0-0 with them in the qualifiers.

Netherlands in normal mode maybe. Not this Netherlands.
They would need an epic transformation.

Have you EVER seen a team lose its first 2 matches and still win the Cup?

talent wise of course they can win, but the team is in a bad state.
Their application and attitude tonight did not bode well and I suspect reflects some bad atmosphere in the change rooms. The dutch are notorious for in fighting, everyone has an opinion.

If we do make it thru, again unlikely, it is possible they could beat russia. But the team doesnt look good.

I'd say Germany looked good, but to be honest, they didn't have to. Gómez took his goals well, Schweinsteiger controlled the midfield, and they ran out the clock masterfully, but the Netherlands were a bit weird tonight. I figured the point of 2 defensive midfielders was to protect the back 4, but they were exposed as all hell. Some of the defending was absolutely woeful, the Hummels chance and when Klose nearly mugged the goalkeeper especially. The Dutch seemed overly fond of giving away needless free kicks too. Weren't the three substitutions identical to those in the Denmark game? They worked a bit better this time around, but 20 minutes earlier. Maybe you should make the changes after 20 minutes against Portugal?

Well, it wasn't useless to cheer for Portugal...

Germany was simply better, Van Bommel twice let Schweinsteiger for free  Against the Portuguese Van Persie-Huntelaar. Sneijder and Robben other forwards and V/d Vaart next to De Jong. And try to win with two goals difference.

Germans did well, didn't have to get to their top level. Although at the end it just could end in a draw. Van Persie scored a nice goal, 'schade' he didn't score his first chance :(

I have a feeling Sneijder and RVP don't get on. In Euro 2008 RVP took a free-kick that Sneijder was supposed to take and Sneijder criticised him for it after the tournament. Plus in the Brazil game I think it was, when RVP got subbed he told Van Marwijk that Sneijder should of been taken off instead.

yeh I remember that, dutch players not getting a long is nothing new
I'm sure Balotelli is really dutch :D

It isn't very good how all the dutch players make public critiscms in the media. Since denmark game a number have spoken out (IE: VdV), I understand frustration and disappointment but that is not the way to do it.

Germany weren't even that good, we allowed them to go second gear.

Entirely as expected, no surprise at all. Despite the pathetic attempts by all concerned to put a brave face on this debacle and maintain some illusion of beating Portugal by at least two goals while Germany beats Denmark - it ain't gonna happen!

Please God that one final embarrassment will see the end of Van Marwijk and his entire PSV-biased staff, as well as the end of Lothar van Bommel's international career.

That is a good one. Matthaus in Euro 2000 was shocking against Romania and had a poor tournament.

Like I said in a previous post surely it is time for Maher and Strootman to be introduced after this tournament. I also have to say another young player Luc Castaignos made an awful blunder joining Inter. He turned us down as a 16 year old and I seen quite a bit of him for Dutch youth teams in the past and Feyenoord but he left them away too early in my opinion. His education would of been best served staying at Feyenoord a bit longer.

Who would all the Dutch fans want instead of Van Marwijk?

It's hard to say, but personally I would like a coach who doesn't use this 4-2(holding midfielders) system. One ok, two... no.

as for players coming through...
Maher, Narsingh, De Jong (Luuk), Strootman, Wijnaldum, Lens, Pieters (would have played if not injured), Willems etc. We have some decent talent coming through, I hope a few of these guys can get a chance in the coming years.

Cheer up Duchies. You only have to beat the Portuguese by a two goal margin and hope the Germans for once, give you a favour by beating the Danes.
I do remember the 2006 World Cup 2nd round match when the Portuguese knocked out the Dutch though.
What a game it was! Exciting, free flowing and played in the right spirit of the game:rolleyes:

Don't think that will happen. The Dutch Football federation said before the game that whatever happens in the match Van Marwijk is safe. He also recently extended his contract until 2016, so the duchies will have to wait another 4 years before they get their wish:p

The names of possible replacements for Van Marwijk don't exactly jump out to you at the moment. I wonder would Rijkaard return for a second spell and leave Saudi Arabia. He did well in his first spell and it was a travesty that they lost in the semis in Euro 2000 to Italy on pens. He would bring a more attack minded mindset to the team. Huub Stevens has plenty of experience and before the Germany game said yee would'nt get out of the group and that Van Marwijk should change his approach and start both RVP and Huntelaar up front. Koeman has done a good job at Feyenoord but he done a shocking job at Valencia when he fell out with the senior players. Martin Jol seems settled at Fulham and I could'nt see him leaving at this present time and the same goes for Frank De Boer at Ajax. He turned down an approach from Liverpool recently to stay at Ajax. Who knows the Dutch FA could even do something differrent like they did when they first appointed Rijkaard and then Van Basten and appoint someone with no previous experience.

Like I said there just does'nt seem to me to be an outstanding candidate. It is a difficult one though.

I always liked Rijkaard and thought he did a decent job when head coach. The italy game was the most frsutrating game I've seen. Who knows how we didn't score.

Not a fan of Koeman personally (tho I think Feyenoord have a good young team), nor Jol for that matter. Advocaat is going to PSV after Russia, not a fan of him either (plus he has had his chance(s)).

I'd like to see De Boer coach some day, but not yet.

It was the game where Van Nistelrooy was stupidly dropped and not even brought on a sub and Kuyt played as the main striker. Van Basten should of got sacked after that game for me.
Can't u remember the record 4 Red cards and 16 yellows cards.

If you play a 4-2-3-1 system, one of the two defensive mid fielders must be a deep lying play maker like Xavi, Pirlo or Xabi Alonso. The Dutch haven't got such players in the squad and even though Van Bommel started his career as a more attacking MF. it's clear his quality of passing has dropped a lot.
U cannot play Van Der Vaart their because he's poor at tracking back and defending, so the only feasible option is to play Snejder alongside De Jong, cause he's better at defending than VDV and play Van persie or VDV behind the striker.

You guys won the 2011 and 2012 U 17 Euros, both times beating Germany.Willems is from the 2011 U 17 winning team. You should have some talented players for the next generation, but the big question is whether they will play as a team.
