Actually the technique the Giro uses to calculate time gaps via gps takes into account the current speed of the riders, so it does affect the time gap shown on screen - which is what Hatch might be referring to. I don't have the math for you but you can witness it in action on the Val Martello climb. The gap was swinging 20 seconds back and forwards every time they hit a change of gradient (and speed.)

He might not be as daft as you think :p

Seriously???

The gap is calculated by the time the rider behind's gps passed a point minus the time the rider in the front's gps passed the same point.

It doesnt matter if the rider in front is now cycling on quicksand at the point where the gap is calculated the two riders have been over the exact same terrain and gradient.

All the gps is adding is giving more points to calculate the gap from and constant time checks. It isnt doing some wonky calculation of where the two riders currently are.

It works that way on the GPMs and the sprint points but elsewhere on the road it would seem it is the time between the two motos GPS' being relayed.

The only relevant stats, though, are distance covered/distance remaining, and time gap.

The race is scored on time, and all riders cover the same distance if they want to be classified finishers, so the distance between them is not a relevant stat to the results, so if it's any additional effort to calculate they probably just won't bother.

It would give the time gap more relevance on course. If the lead group is riding say 45km/h trying to form a break and the bunch is doing 25km/h as if on a club ride, say during the 3rd week of a GT, gaps of 7/8 mins are common, sometimes even higher. As the speed of the riders is not always on screen, knowing the gap to the bunch was say 2.7km / 7m50s would give some sort of context as to what the time gap meant.

With GPS relaying points on the road anyway, they have this data already. GPS1: 15.3 km to go, GPS 2: 15.7km to go (gap 400m).

Put it this way, I don't see how it would detract from anything to have this knowledge. Just as one day the technology will allow for all riders to have GPS in their shoe to transit their location throughout the race. There will one day be a graphic of a mountainside and it will show where any selection of riders are immediately. None of this sitting around for 20 mins trying to guess who's under the black rainjacket on a descent filmed from a mile above.

The other day the break finished about 14 mins ahead of the peloton and there was no indication of how for the GC guys had to travel to finish. With a kms to go graphic only used to show how far the leaders are from the finish, sometimes it is of more relevance to the chasers. Such as when a break gets ahead on a climb and the GC guys are marking each other. How far are they to the summit? Who knows! We tend to only know when the 5km / 3km /1 km marks are passed on the road.

A lot of people think this but like argyllflyer says it's just untrue.

The problem with your technique is they'd need too many people/checkpoints to measure the time gap, and they don't have the resources for that. They do it at some of the banners but otherwise they don't bother and instead use the "wonky" calculation.

Oh I missed Carlton while he was away...

As Fuglsang trundles in...

"He's going to do it...! He'll be top 7 I wager...! (14th) Oh it's tight at the top!"

And Hesjedal is still able to win a GT. :D

Why single out Fuglsang? He did that for just about every single rider as they approached the finish.

Y'know, much worse than listening to commentators' effusive praise for Team Sky is listening to their attempts to justify that effusive praise, at length.

The way they went from happy and excited the whole stage to sounding sad and completely defeated at the line says everything that needs to be said about how biased they are

Kirby

Has anyone heard Kirby or Smith talk about Froomes asthma and inhaler ?? its on all the news and these two idiots, as far as i am aware, havent even mentioned it.

Omerta still as strong as ever. Kirby still an insult to all cycling audiences.
