Didn't know that. That is the NT bogan roots coming through. That wins fans right there. Sounds like people I know who are getting married this weekend. They are bogan enough to bring the dogs to the wedding. I will ask them if they did next time I see them.

If Cadel bought a real dog, like the husky malamute cross I have at home, it will grow and grow. 12 weeks old and big enough and snappy enough that if you trod on it, I won't have to cut your head off, the dog will do it herself.

You guys must be perfect....

Evans Vs Valverde

Well if it produces stages like today's, who cares. It's a healthy rivalry. I do agree though about the SBS coverage. Maybe I will just turn the sound down. But I suppose they have to cater to the whole audience, not just the people who know a little about cycling.

I wouldn't really call it a rivalry. Evans continously comes out on the losing end...and seemingly, as often pointed out by the OP, versus those dreaded Spaniards! It seems where Valverde goes Evans intends to follow, in an effort to counter any attempts at glory/victory. Possiblly using the results of the 2009 Dauphine and Vuelta as his motivation. I can appreciate his efforts in putting on a good show and represent the WC jersey well. Personally the two riders are at the opposite ends of my spectrum of riders that I enjoy to watch race and follow their careers and those that seem to simply annoy me and rub me the wrong way.

So you call people who like a rider idiots? Am I an idiot because of that?
if your friends are supposedly very intelligent and then they believe all winners are dopers don' you think that opnion is a bit harsh? You make it sound like you hang out with the upper class smarter people of society. don't take this the wrong way but you make it sound like your better than everyone else.

To be fair ACF, viewing some of your past posts one would be surprised that you would be so appalled at Galic calling certain fans of Evans idiots considering you have used similar wording in your posts to describe fans of other riders. You can't have it both ways otherwise you appear to be a bit of a hypocrit.

Ha - that sounds like a rivalry!

I am also not sure if I would call it a rivalry. They are two similar riders who target the same races (hilly classics, worlds, and GTs) and they are naturally going to go head to head at some stage during the year. This is just racing, not a rivalry. A would call a rivalry something like Contador v Armstrong, or perhaps even Cavendish v Hushovd (at least in the 2009 TdF). Rivalries are born out of both competition and hatred. I don't see the hatred in Cadel v Valverde.

Continuously? He lost Dauphine by a rather narrow margin, he also lost the Vuelta possibly due to a defect. On the other hand he won the WC though Valverde wasn't his main rival for that. Am I missing something, 2 losses and a win doesn't exactly equal "continuously" losing.

My friends are very intelligent and are typical aussie sports fanatics, meaning they know a lot about a plethora of sports and their stars and the history. Except soccer. They have no clue then. Watch the socceroos fans when Australia get smacked in South Africa. Majority of the nation will be shocked and make an excuse (sound like someone we all know) to cover their ineptitude and prior dithering and BS.

Germany 1-1
Ghana 1-2
Serbia 0-1

What Valverde does the road earns him much praise (from people with some knowledge). I agree that the rivalry is healthy.

Even if Evans comes across as a whiney, self-focused and 2nd-tier, he deserves credit for being a fierce competitor. Apart from his two defensive years in the Tour, he's done enough to be someone worth having in a race. Sirstrong got in two parades on Sunday and Friday, no doubt his efforts in the spring are similar... Evans and Valverde went racing on Thursday and Saturday and will go full tilt up until Geelong.

You have 2 consecutive Dauphine's where Evans has finished 2nd, with an emphasis on the fact that Evans was in the leader's jersey when Valverde's attack resulted in his losing the race lead and ultimately the overall. While the WC is an obvious tick on Evans' side, in head to head battles Valverde has come out far and way on top, if you look at victory being the form of measurement. I don't even see how it can be argued, with Valverde being the more prolific in terms of actual victories.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Evans overall ability. I recognize that he is one of the major talents in today's peloton. Admittedly, my first thought when I saw him off the front in the WC road race on his way to victory, was "Hell no, anyone but him!". I softened up once he was on the podium and his emotions flowed and I actually felt happy for him and I still am. That doesn't change things though. He still annoys the hell out of me for some reason quite likely in a similar but far lesser degree that Valverde bothers the OP and is it the "Ripper" (I believe thats the poster's name) who can't help but insert some form of bile before and after typing Valverde's name.

Even if there was a rivalry between Evans and Valverde, I doubt they would go head to head at the TdU. Valverde merely set up LLS for a victory, because he and LLS are among the strongest in the participating field. Then add Evans to it, because he is Australian and does exceedingly well on these climbs.

So it seems more like a survival of the fittest (on this parcours) which resulted in them ending up together instead of antagonistic/vindictive sentiments that made them move.

Actually, the bile is usually after his name, such as Valv-piti-piece-O-sh*t :D Now, having said this, I would not negatively comment on Valv-piti's racing abilities, as he is clearly one of the best riders in the game and has a great finishing sprint.

He married a piano teacher. But I suppose it's hard to make the distinction from all the way up on that high horsie of yours.

+1 Galic Ho comes across as arrogant as the people she has never met yet judges and berates based on 30 second sound bites she has seen on the tube / read online.

If anyone saw the race on SBS, Evans and Valverde were quite clearly discussing something (stomping the climb?) as they headed towards its second ascent. Certainly not what I would have called a rivalry - Caisse have to start showing themselves in the media to get attention and a new sponsor, and Cadel + BMC are equally keen to get media attention and show themselves to increase their racing-worth for inclusion in future wild card UCI / ASO races.

Greipel was right behind them as they discussed the climb (at least that's the way it looked), I can only imagine what was going through his head. Considering you had Sky, Milram and Columbia all chasing them down over the top, I think Evans and Valverde (+ the other 2) clearly worked together for the common cause.

Compared to the rest of the rather formulaic stages, Willunga was great viewing.

+1 totally agree. I noticed that chat too and then once Cadel was alone on the climb it looked to me as if he was waiting / expecting Valverde to come coz he kept looking over his shoulder. Cadel must have known that alone he had no chance of staying clear let alone taking the time he needed from Griepel.

I still don't know where LLS came from as the coverage first showed Evans dropping Sulzberger and then cut back to valv.piti with Sagan in tow. The next minute LLS is up there with them. Either he was in between the riders or bridged up to Valverde from further back? In any case, great riding by the quartet and a shame they couldn't hold off the peloton by a bigger margin and take the leaders jersey. Best stage I've seen in OZ.

3/4 up the climb evans said he waited for valverde as he knew he couldn't go solo. I was confused of where LLS was.

I thought both LLS and Valverde went together. LLS i think went first and then camera was on V. brilliant stage! Rumours the Schelcks might come next year, if they do lets hope the TDU has a hill top finish.

Spot on, I saw that too.

From the body language (cycle language), there did not appear to be any animosity - almost...well chatty

But what happened to Lance, who wanted to rip it up with CE and AV, but instead Popo was there with CE?

Had Lance burned too many matches in his unplanned "attack" the day before?

I thought lack of media questions asking why he did not "put on a show" was lacking, and said something in itself.

You really think they get along? Evans doesn't like valverde but i think valverde just sees evans as another top rider. To me it looked like they were arguing about which teams should take the lead on the front and ride. He probalby doesn't know what the foo fighters are. :D
