Are results from 4 years ago super-relevant?

If he is not sick with covid, as some of his teammates that couldnt start the race, then there is still everything to ride for in the upcoming weeks.

Right now he is the underdog, but maybe that will suit him. Have we ever seen Roglic on the offense in the 3rd week? It is all about limiting the damage in the next two weeks. Then we will see.

QS will let all the bonuses go up the road as they did at the Vuelta. It will be a breakaway bonanza.

And Rog no longer has the team to bring the back.

This Giro is going to be won or lost at high altitude in week 3. I think those mountain stages will create bigger gaps than the flat ITT's.

And for what it's worth Roglič is one of the best climbers at high altitude in the peloton.

Well he sure looked happy to me, great dimples showing and 20 stages to go eh?
To me he looked kind of embarassed. Well not embarassed - that is a bit to strong. In Slovenian language we have a word for that but I cant find anything similar in English. Anyway, this was Rogla not knowing what to say wrapping his feelings in semi-humorous remarks.

He surely couldn’t have expected being so far back but like many before me have already stated. Nothing is lost yet. He needs to see his way to the decisive mountain stages unharmed where he will have plenty of opportunity to put minutes into Remco…

This. 3rd week is so heavy that you need to be in top shape to hang on.
Roglic has at least a few friends atm with Almeida/Vine/McNut in UAE and Hart in Ineos. All of these riders will need to claw back time when they can.

Wouldn't only focus on Remco, Almeida and Hart look extremely good and are also proven in 3 week GTs.

Roglic is one of the best climbers regardless of climb length and elevation. The question is: can he beat Evenepoel by 2 or so minutes? Time will tell, I have doubts. But everybody can crack OFC.

As we are always reminded at the GT, GTs are marathons..You cannot rely on first 20 km of the stage 1 too much. Otherwise Roglič would be winner of Giro in Bologna after stage 1 2019 Giro. This is different GT Roglič this year than ever, be aware of that..Different approach to go for it. "Na konc' gajžla poč'." ;)

Tirreno TT was his first race back and he wasn't flying that hard on the climbs there either, it wouldn't have been that much of a stretch to assume his TT would be better today.

The overall picture doesn't change that much though, he always needed to beat Evenepoel in the mountains, but if he needs to gain over 2 minutes it's gonna be a lot harder than if it would've been only 1.
Sorry, LMAO! Until I read your post I thought that 1 or 2 min. would be the same! :p

Just when Roglič is put into situation where he will have to attack at least at some point if he wants to win, people that were praying for no "wheel-sucking" just a week or two ago, are now arguing that Remco will force others into nothing but following his wheel by setting a strong pace himself. :confused_old::tonguewink:

He lost time in the Tirreno TT to Almeida, McNulty and Arensman though that one was purely flat. I think some people put too much faith on the fact that he is the Olympic Champion. Roglic's main strength has always been hilly and preferably more technical time-trials because he picks speed faster than others due to his explosiveness and recovers very well from those efforts. Still, I thought he would have been top5 and around 20 seconds behind Evenepoel, so not great indeed.
20 seconds behind Evenepoel means 2 seconds ahead of Ganna.

There are 2 (extreme) ways to go by today if you're Roglič fan...
-Be depressed. Because Remco (and some other GT riders) is clearly much stronger and the Giro is lost
-Believe that Roglič is (intentionally) a bit under-cooked (even compared to some other GT riders) and Remco coming in very hot, so the hard third week will be a completely different story

Of course, all while knowing that Giro is a long race where a lot can happen even ignoring the toughness of 3rd week efforts.

Getting beat but second rate Almeida in the TT twice this year, Evenepoel would never ;) :p

Hopefully he’s able to overcome whatever is going on with Jumbo to keep healthy throughout the race and give us some proper fireworks. UAE or Ineos keeping multiple riders high could come into his favor like the long raid in the Vuelta with Bernal come the third week and Evenepoel is ahead of everyone by minutes as what is presumed.

Going to need a monster 3rd week to turn this around. It’s looking Remco will have a big enough buffer he’ll have the luxury of being able to ride at his own pace if he wants when attacked in the mountains, rather than risking going too much in the red to follow. This should play to his strengths.

It's 43 seconds, not 10 minutes. I expect him to lose an additional 1m15s on the other TT, bringing the total deficit to roughly 2 minutes. Subtract a few boniseconds left and right and he's left with 1m45s. I think either Evenepoel isn't weaker in the mountains, and in that case it wouldn't matter whether he lost today by 43 seconds or by 15 seconds. He was always going to have to drop Evenepoel at some point. Or Evenepoel is weaker (or more fatigued do to being more wasteful with his efforts) and could lose time the entire last week, which means 1m45s is peanuts. Remember how much Pogacar lost in just one MTF. Nearly 3 minutes.

Every second could count ie Evenepoel can lose 60-90 seconds only on one stage at the end or lose 30 seconds thrice in the 3rd week. It doesnt have to be dramatic, he can be only a bit weaker than Roglic in the mountains and then those 2 minutes or so after TTs can be crucial.

This is the emotion I'm trying to describe too. I've seen this before. This guy is fiercely competitive, of course it's weighing on him when things doesn't fully get his way. He's a human after all. I also believe nothing is lost yet. 3 weeks is a long time.
