Both can be true. And i already said this wasn't a great ride by him. But it was also not a bad ride. If you finish in the same time as Küng and just 22s behind Ganna on this course, you didn't do a bad TT.
Yup. The word I'm gonna go with is "mediocre" or perhaps "a bit underwhelming" but definitely not "bad".

I'm afraid his bike is now slower, compared to his rivals.
Yeah, a few others mentioned it as well and I was also thinking about this. Weird, because I always thought Cervélo were top-notch at designing TT-bikes. I could be wrong though, it's just this image I have of them.

Anyway, I think for this Giro they are really trying to make Roglic hit peak form at week 3. It would make sense as well.
I'm still just as stoked to see the rest of this tour unfold as I was two days ago. 40 seconds is nothing over three weeks and if anything, it forces Roglic into attack mode somewhere. I just have this feeling we're gonna be in for a Giro the likes of which we haven't seen for a couple of years. I don't know who'll come out on top, and I don't even really care, but I really feel we're about to witness something special.

I chuckled a little as well.

But it got me thinking; Why don't we ever see Tour GC contenders ride the Giro as training for it? Like, in May, they're training at altitude often anyway. Why not put in similar efforts whilst occasionally supporting your Giro leader? Is it because of the mental fatigue from racing compared to training (though there is still this in one week races)? How is Vingegaard's shape greatly worsened from riding the Giro and finishing 1-2 hours down on GC? He could race 2-3 mountain stages hard (which is probably what he would do in training during this period anyway), soft pedal others, maybe test out his time trial form on either stage 1 or 9.

Interested in people's thoughts on this. When did GC riders last do this? I recall Lance in 2009, though he didn't soft pedal much and circumstances were different coming back from retirement. Ullrich was going down this path in 2006, but we know what happened. In theory, why couldn't your Tour leader ride the Giro as support whilst skipping a couple of earlier one week races? Or is it all more clinic related?
Cadel tried it in 2010, got sucked into a GC battle though

So today on stage three Rogla was picked up by sprinters stats. Finishing seventh. Good thing he tried. To open the legs a bit. Moving up to third place in GC. I like the trend. Tomorrow i have a feeling we will get a first taste of some proper GC action.

Today turned out to be proper strategic action. Not sure much can be learned from it other than future stages will have more adventurers seeking breakaways.

UAE and EF really stress tested SOQ today on stage 4. Exposed their potential weaknesses. JV rode smart and now i guess to get safely through stage 5 and 6. On stage 7 i guess first real big opportunity for Rogla to go after the stage win.

I still don't know what the hell SOQ was doing the first hour(s) today. They spent way too much energy trying to reel in each and every attack. They should get their act together, otherwise I see Ineos blowing them away at a certain stage.
As far as Roglic is concerned, no matter how you look at it, he has a weakened team. The onus isn't on Jumbo here. The team can only try to keep him safe and up front as much as possible, and when the true mountains come he just has to Roglstomp. Gut feeling tells me that Ineos could take this if they play their cards right though.

Still, it's only week one. We're in for a treat.

My own gut feeling is the best climber in the race will take this, no matter the team. Gran Sasso should be an early indicator.

Also, looking at weather forecasts rights now it seems the Savignano sul Rubicone - Cesena ITT on Sunday could be a wet one, i.e. they're expecting rain.

That could make it a little more interesting.

Apparently Tratnik needed surgery for the knee. It went good and he is already cheering for Primož from his hospital bed.

As for team strength. This i guess is something we will have to wait for a while. To see if JV can make a difference. For now it's rather important to get Primož safely through the stages. And here i feel that the team was there when needed.

Down twice today, hopefully nothing to bad.:confused_old:
More Rain tomorrow............
Ok, thanks…

I feared it. If Remco crashes twice, Primoz also crashes twice, at the least.

Clearly we‘re looking forward to the big mountain stages, but a crash now could end the race for Primoz and other GC riders… :(

I didn't see today's stage - did Roglic look ok after the crash?

Yes. This was the crash where he went down, i.e. for what it's worth it was pretty soft.

The second one (the Remco one) could have been nasty but it seems like he escaped with only a small cut on his leg.

Roglic only crashed once, but he was lucky not to go down twice. Source: Primoz Roglic. And it's all good, according to him.

Lucky yes, but that save from crashing 2.7km from the finish line was some nice bike handling skills, especially on the wet roads. Just look at that video of 2nd crash from Remco and put your eyes on the bottom left Jumbo guy going to the left, couple of centimeters from the head of the fallen rider. That was Roglic.
