I get that fans like ourselves are prone to overanalysing stuff (that applies to all sports) but there's stuff here that doesn't add up, like Patxi Vila just said in the pre-stage interview on Eurosport that there's nothing medically wrong with Rog, whilst Rog just said he couldn't even ride the bike yesterday:

To quote the guy, we'll see huh.
I understand this to mean that he doesn't have any fever, fractures, sprains, open wounds, etc. Whereas stiff and sore muscles, joints, disturbed rest and such doesn't count on that. Like nothing is actually broken but still compromised.

What is worrying though is the level of whole team. They were pretty bad on grand tours already last year.

The obvious double-speak from RB-Bora and Roglic can be explained quite simply.

Roglic is still in the race because his starting bonus likely depends on him finishing. We are probably talking about more than a million euros just for making it to the end, six more days of hanging in there.

This is the same dilemma Remco faced when he abandoned the Giro. He wanted the appearance fee, but the organizers insisted it was conditional on completing the race. Since then, race organizers have tightened the rules. Bonuses are now tied to finishing.

If there were no financial incentive, Roglic would have gone home already. It is professional sport. Money drives the decisions. That is what makes it professional.

Commentators and pundits on tv need to stop pretending - I've listened to two hours of commentary now on this and not a singel person has brought up the OBVIOUS reason for why people do what they do - in sport and life. Please.

That's nice and reasonable as far as takes & all but the big elephant in the room here is there's no reason to assume Rog is getting paid an appearance fee to take part in this Giro.

No reason, really? Just 20 years of this practice being reported, and maybe 80 years of this practice being conducted. Do you really belive MVDP, Remco, Pogacar, Wout, Froome, and so on gets money but Roglic, who won the race, and only goal left in his career is to win the Tour was persuaded by what exactly?

Wout is riding the giro for his 2024 attendance fee. This is one of the things you can really trust Johan Bruyneel on - he knows how the game is played.

Yeah. That was that. Let's hope it's not to serious.

Moot point anyway because he just DNF'd.

Time to leave this race and focus on the Vuelta. Yes, the Vuelta and not the Tour. He is banged up so there is no point in chasing windmills at the TDF. Better to recover and reach peak shape for September. He will have only Jonas there.
Instead of wasting his time and starting today he should have went home on Sunday. Time to refocus for La Vuelta Ciclista a Espana.

It's the Rogla experience. It's an acquired taste for masochistic fans.

Never a dull moment. Always a real blast.

MY point exactly!! You're the one saying that there is "no reason" to believe that Rog got payed. Mate.

I don't even know what we're arguing about anymore but let's continue. Nothing else going on now anyway, so let's fight this one out. Just kidding, but seriously I say Rog didn't get paid.

Why? Because the choice to ride the Giro was tactical based on some theoretical assumption from his team that he would arrive in better condition mentally at the Tour if he won the Giro beforehand.

Evidently that didn't exactly work out quite as planned. Let's just hope he's still got the base intact to work with in order to do something in July.

Or crash out of that one as well and then do the Vuelta because why not.
