That's it, then. I was curious to see if he had actually recovered some form today, but judging by his uncharacteristically open interview this is maybe for the best.

Gotta say, this one hurts even more, because there isn't going to be an epic comeback in the Tour. He's not competing with Pog and Vingo, and the Vuelta would probably be too much of an ask after one GT and a half (assuming he doesn't crash out of the Tour, which is a big assumption).

He falls too much. That second crash in the TT recon in those conditions was his fault, talking the curb that way. After a couple of falls you can't go as fast as expected. A third fall and you retire.
The 2 hardest crashes clearly weren't his fault. I don't know about today but I saw no clear wounds so I presume he just had had enough and decided to get in the car.

I mean Rog crashes a lot, sure. But there's also a disproportionate amount of focus on him and his crash related DNF's.

It's not just about who was responsible for the crashes it's basically everyone is in a meat-grinder. Bernal crashes a load of times as well. Hell, the greatest bike handler on earth and God's gift to cycling aka the great Mathieu Van der Poel crashed his mountain bike all by himself the other day.

And Red Bull Bora lost both GC leaders in this Giro, aka Hindley as well.

He should retire and go for Suisse-Tour. A Giro podium or stage win is less than a Suisse win. He needs to rest not to make that injury even worse. I know some fans are emotional but his chances are gone, his form is going down, not up. He was even training on *** rollers. Wouldn't surprise me if he retires mid stage today.
Sadly I was right. Unfortunately he crashed again, hopefully not too hard.

As much as I hope he goes for TdS, he will probably think that going there would jeopardize his preparation for the Tour. Not sure to do what exactly, getting a podium there doesn't do anything for his legacy.
He needs to stay more in the peloton and the TdS route is really good for him.

You say. Mentality and physically there are normally consequences.

I'll bite and play Rog's advocate here. That ITT crash happened less than 48 hours after he crashed on the gravel stage. We now know that crash was absolutely not benign and he really did hurt himself, namely his shoulder (the one that was operated on over two years ago).

So by that point (& the crash during the ITT recon that you're singling out here) he really wasn't himself anymore.

I'm saying that crash, his second, which could have entirely been avoided by being cautious, didn't help and may have added to his problems.

I am still inspired, by the relentless nature of Rogla, feelings involved are still genuine and going strong, hard to ask for more. True privilege.

So around 40 days till the Tour now, what i will do, tribute to Rogla trial and tribulations at Giro, i will achieve a goal, a rather hard goal, a goal that i wouldn't otherwise set out to achieve in this period till the Tour. On top of that i will hug people that are close to me more and tell them more that i love them. As Klemen said, How Much Time Do We Have Left, we never know.

Thank you Rogla and prepare good, beating Pogi, Jonas and Remco, at the Tour, can't wait!

I am not inspired at all, it's an absolute disaster and I feel terrible. This is worse than last year's tour DNF, because it was already quite clear he can't win there but he was race favorite here.

We haven't even seen any GC action at all, no battles with Ayuso, Del Toro.. terrible race.

Nah. Nothing is worse than crashing out of the Tour. He's not the first rider to lose a totally winnable GT either.

And yeah, a Rog with his usual form was winning this one with a finger in his nose but hey, that's cycling.

Yeah this was about the worst case scenario. It would have been great to see him perform at least once in the mountains before crashing out. This was just a beatdown from moment 0. The ITTs provided a glimmer of interest, but he didn't win either of them. Total disaster for him. And now Pelizzari looks like Vingegaard 2.0.

First time huh? Just kidding. But seriously. He'll be back as long as his health permits it. And Pellizzari just recently was talking about how Rog always dropped him on the climbs in training. So don't read too much into today's stage.

Until Rog returns I'll just ignore the usual weirdos with their tier ranking lists where Rog gets demoted down to Damiana Caruso levels because they've got nothing better to do with their time on the internet.

Your post was definitely before today's last climb. The guy that seemed best poised to do damage to UAE alongside a healthy Roglic fared very well. The race was always going to be decided in Week 3.
