I maintain yesterday would have gone better if he'd had Sepp Kuss de la grande époque to pace him on Hautacam.

The way the race unfolded was really detrimental to him when he's in life preserver mode. Yeah Lipowitz was totally right to chase his own result and good luck to him but the material point is Rog always rode better on bad days with a wingman there to help him. Meanwhile leaving him out "in the sticks" with 7km to go and guys attacking him with zero support was always going to end badly.

Wasn't Lipowitz helping him in the first half of the climb? Maybe the pace was too high.

ATM i wouldn't put too much thought in next season and GT racing, Tour 2025 is now all there is to it. If having a bad leg day on a hill then team support hence isn't available. OK. Lets focus on good leg days and build on that. Today's ITT should normally suit Rogla very much, so lets see what the clock says at the end of it. As for the hills, Rogličes terrain is still to come and hence just about anything is still possible.

I look around the peloton and I see a lot of known names in there exploding all over this race. A few years ago Carlos Rodriguez was called a GT podium contender. Remember how he once mugged Pog and Vinge on Joux Plane? Seems like a lifetime ago. No injuries or crashes to explain the falloff either (like for Alaphilippe) but there's others as well, i.e. even a younger rider like Lenny Martinez who seems to have his FdJ form in this Tour has just been seriously underwhelming.

The point is this race has become way too fast to enter with half-baked form and sketchy values. He could have maybe gotten away with this sort of approach 4-5 years ago and podiumed but not now.
I believe that C Rod has had a lot of crashes actually.

And he usually gets better as the race goes on. I believe he could climb a few positions in GC this race still.

Lenny seems to be very inconsistent. He is young, but also a tiny climber guy. I guess the first week has been kind of hard on him. He will have good and bad days.

Of course those years are behind him, he won 3 grand tours after that and not on boni seconds.
Indeed. Which brings us back to my previous post which this post was referencing. It would greatly depend on opposition. Now take a look at those 3 grand tours he won, and against who he won them.

When we see these younger stars and big names struggling for xyz reasons I think it really puts everything in perspective, i.e. there's a point when we just have to take a step back and say "Rog is nearly 36". I mean... if G Thomas gets to ride around France like a tourist I think Rog should be cut some slack.
It has nothing to do with cutting Rog some slack. It's simply about being realistic. Each your it will become more and more difficult, indeed Rog is nearly 36. That was part of my point.

To be clear, I’m by no means trying to rag on him. I think it’s clearly bad luck (Giro crashes were not his fault; illness was not his fault) and IMO a poor decision to go to the Tour while not in shape to contend, effectively causing this year to be more or less a flop in terms of palmares.
