Primož Roglič: “I won’t race a single race between Tour de Romandie and Vuelta a España (where he will target GC). I want to be home a bit, it's been a long time since I was there. I'd like to spend some time with family."

If this is true it is an interesting approach.
Last season I guess

To be fair, he is racing 2 more GC's before taking his break, and once spring is gone, and summer comes there isn't much to do for him. Suisse & Dauphiné whilst big one week races in their own right are also mostly prep races for the Tour.
I doubt he cares about Pologne, Deutschland, Belgium Tour, .. . and it might not be the best prep to include any of those for the vuelta. Remco might feel motivation for them, but roglic? I doubt it. San Sebastian could be the one bigger race that could be an option imo. So by skipping the summer he is basically skipping San Sebastian. That's about it.

He said at the start of the season he wasn't thinking about retirement much, but that can ofcourse be the usual Roglic smokescreen.

To me it appears he does really enjoy racing, but he struggles with the training and especially extended periods away from his family. His coach (last year, I don't know if he retired) said he needed the altitude camps mostly because he could focus on training better.

Outside of that, you don't know if there's lingering injury issues, but I think if you want to manage Roglic in his final contract year and the main goal is the Vuelta, letting him minmax the spring a little bit and have him being the dual leader in races like Tirreno and Itzulia isn't a bad idea.

I have been thinking a lot about his retirement on home roads (ECRR).
One last 12 second pull for Pogacar before waving goodbye

I think he should retire after this season.
One last try at the vuelta with good form and then end this great career.
Im a big fan but I dont want to see him decline slowly.
Better end with a great race like contador 2017. I think it was the perfect ending.
There's no 'should' unless racing no longer makes him happy.

If he transitions to a slightly lighter schedule but can still do a good Vuelta and if that makes him happy to do that he should by all means continue if there are teams around that want to pay him for that.

I think fans get too hung up on athletes retiring on top

You apply this to, say, music?

How so? In either case one can do what they enjoy without “sponsorship” and spectacle. But maybe I don’t know your point.

I think it will not be easy for Roglic to win big races anymore unless he doesnt face the best GC riders in the peloton.

If you look at how other older riders like the Yates brothers are reflecting on the current level needed they are mentioning that it is just much higher than a couple of years back.

So for Roglic to get back to winning big races he would probably need a higher level than he reached before while being at an age where you normally start detoriorating quite rapidly.

I would love for him to take that record Vuelta win. So maybe if he is lucky with the starting list he can pull it off. But I think he would need relatively poor competition to do it.
Yes but also S Yates literally won the Giro last year against two of the young guns, Del Toro and Pellizzari. And Roglic’s numbers have risen over the years along with the peloton’s. With the exception of Pogacar and Vingegaard, it is not a matter of other riders having surpassed him but a matter of his form not having been there consistently since 2023.

2024 he started slowly, got a win, looked very strong before crashing in Catalunya with Vinge and Remco, had some nice moments in the Tour (and some bad ones), and looked very good in the Vuelta. Already some signs of inconsistency (even in winning the Dauphine), though potentially due to new team, prep mistakes, crashes, etc.

2025 he started slowly in Algarve, then smashed Catalunya and everything after that was basically ruined by the Giro crash. Even then, he was stronger than the rider many call the new number 3 GC rider (Lipowitz) on multiple occasions. Lipowitz did not put up performances that exceeded anything Rog had done.

2026 started a little slowly like previous two years. But again, he did not put up 2024 Vuelta numbers and get smoked; he performed like a guy shaking the rust off.

At some point he is bound to decline significantly, and that might be the case now. Maybe the Giro crash, Tour, Remco joining and preventing him from riding the Tour, ending that dream, time away from his kids, seeing Hamnet, all conspired to tilt him away from that 100% edge required to be at the top of the sport. Or maybe he is just easing into the year. Too early to tell, IMO.

He should 100% be doing fleche this spring and Suisse in the summer. After romandie he can train at home for Suisse for 6 weeks. He's scammed bora completely with this semi-retirement
