He looked better today and I believe he was the strongest but what a ridiculous tactics by the team (hopefully it is not Rog who said he wants to attack with 500m to go on the first time up). I believe if they kept the team somewhat together on the first climb and rode steady between the climbs Rog would have won the race, or, at least, he would have had a better chance of winning it. The RBH tactics is good for a race when Pog is in there, i.e., when the best cyclist is not on your team. When you have the best one, i.e., Rog, then you control and deliver him to the last climb.

I have a really hard time seeing this Roglic as the number one favorite for the Vuelta.

I have a different theory. The shorter the effort the more Roglic has declined. He's not such a beast anymore on intense uphill finishes (like here or in Tirreno) but he's still pretty close to his best on typical long cols: last year's Tour performances on Peyreguades and MtVentoux indicated that (despite *** preparation), Vuelta 2024 was also very good (but it's been 18 months since so not so recent). If he's prepared well for the Vuelta I think he can still win it (if there's no Pogacar and Vingegaard)

Roglic did well on those since they were unipuerto. Should definitely still compete for the win if that’s his only GC focus and doesn’t have anything hamper his training.

Yes, this is the way of thinking of some guys here: his threshold w/kg was good during the Tour but he couldn't utilize his best power anymore on more difficult stages (he had no normal preparation but only troubles since the Giro).

The problem is his lack of kick. He can't drop everyone right now like he used to do 5 years ago.

Even today was already better than Tirreno (longer, steadier climb). On those steep, decisive 30+ minute climbs (Calar Alto, Pandera, Alguacil) it'll be about sustained w/kg not about explosivity. And I still think only Pogacar and Vingegaard are better at that (but 2-3 other guys are probably close now).

Stomping is also a function of training, and it's probably the sort of training that is most tiring to keep up all season long. If you're taking it slightly slower, it makes sense to not put as much effort to keep the Stomp big in March.

Secondly, it's also just a function of capacity, and today Pidcock attacks after Rogla has just spent much more effort than him.

The field was weaker but he definitely looked better. I think Del Toro surpassed Roglic though. But we will see in Pais Vasco against Seixas, Ayuso, Del Toro.

I would say mythical peak Remco, Almeida and Lipowitz would give Rogla a run for his money in a GT. Not sure about Del Toro, Ayuso and especially Seixas.

Nah. Mythical peak Remco can hang with peak Roglic but still lose IMO, but the others are not there yet. The young ones might get there someday but not there yet. Almeida is good but overrated.

Almeida did well at last Vuelta and had great Angliru performance. So yeah, I stick to Remco and Almeida but not 100% sure about Lipowitz yet.
