It is not a coincidence at all that the same thing keeps happening over and over again.

Also it seems the world has really conspired against Roglic this Giro. Soon as he crashes and abandoned:
- rain stops immediately and sun starts shining
- proper mountains start and UAE finally show some weakness
- Pelizzari starts to climb well again

Inclusion of mini Strade Bianche was a mistake. Giro, due to the calendar, already has many issues with weather and as a result crash fest stages are already a guarantee. There was really no need for inclusion of stages, that would further degrade the integrity of the race.

He crashed 3 more times though. And not because of the gravel stage.
To say he's been cheated out because a part of the race doesn't fit his characteristics is I think a bit over the top. Many parts of racing are risky and many crashs happened in "standard" situations.

I feel it's fair to say stage 9 did on what it was planted there to do. After that there could be further crashes, or maybe they would be avoided, riding healthy. Who knows. What we know is that after stage 9 a kid took over as a leader of the race.

Primoz almost always wins his second GT of the season after crashing out of the first. 4 crashes at the Giro should do regarding Tour victory!

Let's recap:

2019: Giro 3rd, Vuelta 1st
2020: Tour 2nd, Vuelta 1st
2021: Tour DNF, Vuelta 1st
2022: Tour DNF, Vuelta DNF
2023: Giro 1st, Vuelta 3rd
2024: Tour DNF, Vuelta 1st
2025: Giro DNF, Tour ?

2022 is the black sheep on this list. In all honesty 3rd in the Tour is absolutely a realistic objective here.

Yep. This is why onwards and upwards to the Tour now. He's done a load of work and he's not going to waste it. People on the outside can come up with all sorts of narratives they want but at the end of the day Rog and team know what his climbing values were before the Giro. Let's hope we get to see them in July.

And I agree with whichever poster here suggested Rog should ride around towards the back of the bunch in the first week, even at the risk of losing time. I believe that's what Pantani did in 98 and at this point in his career he's far better off losing time than he is losing skin.

If Rog was really up for it he would have easily been 1min ahead of Carapaz today. But I am unsure if Denz's post really meant that.

I don't read it as blaming someone else but more as sad becasue they had hopes he was doing better before he crashed again.

Sadly, I disagree about this silver lining. Today IMO showed the exact opposite - his GC was far from over if he was able to return to form. Ayuso dropped out of contention, Del Toro showed huge cracks, Pelizzari outclimbed every single GC contender, Carapaz looked great but then cracked hard, losing 15 seconds to Pelizzari in a short amount of time. A really good Roglic could have been back in contention after today absolutely.

In all seriousness and in my opinion pro road cycling will never become a top sport, until at least the level of injuries is cut drastically. The way i see it that is rather impossible to achieve short or mid term, without introduction of more injury prevention apparel.

To be hones i don't know. On why organisers tend to do it, sell a GT for one day of a freak show. The way i understand it that day is watched by more viewers, but where is the economy in that? You get much less viewers and a lot of bad publicity through the whole GT, due to GC favourites dropping out and getting injured early.

I am 100% in favor of killing off cobbles and gravel from GTs. Maybe they need to create a new hardcore one week race that's like the P-N equivalent with rugged weather, cobbles, some meme steep climbs, chunky gravel. But bring back some longer ITTs and get rid of all the roll of the dice ***.

btw people type whatever they feel like typing but the material point that's pretty much indisputable is out of his 4 crashes in this Giro, 3/4 of these crashes were due to someone else's mistake.

He got taken out by Lucas Hamilton's crash on stage 9, the crash with Tiberi and Tarling on the wet cobbles on Saturday and now today by Carapaz.

The one that he did all by himself was the ITT recon.

Those are the facts.

The gravel stage (like cobble stages) exists to create gaps in GC before the mountains. That and of course creating buzz and entertainment for tv ratings.

It's not specifically made for crashes per se but definitely drama and potential time losses for GC favorites. It would be extremely naïve to believe otherwise.

Pelizzari had a better pace than Carapaz who attacked and chased down Pelizzari.

Then why is Roglic the only rider where the narrative is "he just can't ride his bike" when he crashes whereas for others it's omg poor xyz so unlucky.

It is narrative motivated nonsense, and I think it's completely asinine in cases when a rider in in the right place and gets taken out cleanly by a 3rd party.

Crash once, crash twice, you may be unlucky. Crash twenty times and it's time to do some soul searching.

Today's stage has shown: If Roglic had felt better (and the statement of Nico Denz in his daily interview with Cyclingmagazine indicates that Roglic felt good today and that he was motivated) a lot would have been possible. As much as happened today, at least the podium would have been possible. Theoretically. Too bad. But get well soon!

And foremost serious reduction, at least when it comes to injuries, that should be done before even thinking about making a race like GT even more freaky. It's like people involved don't even get it, the crash fest they have on their hands, that is without any of the freak stages involved. Some sort of extremists.
