I for one was breathing a lot easier today. He was present and accounted for until the final climb. An in form Primoz would have been in the mix but all he lost was bonus seconds.

It was a little worrisome that he dropped on the climb 5k or so from the finish. It came back together, but as he learned yesterday, he needs to not assume it will come back together. Normally he should be top 3 on this stage, so hopefully he's just saving his bullets. The problem is he might save his bullets just to get top 3 two minutes back on the climbing stages. Is that better than burning a match to go for a stage victory early? I'm not sure. I hope he doesn't ride this to an anonymous top 5, to be honest.

I like that he was there on the final climb, but his positioning got him gapped earlier. On one hand I hope he’s riding into form for later on, but I am concerned he’s not looking like or riding like a real contender here. Let’s see on Wednesday what he brings. I honestly feel like he has one foot out the door (looking to retiring soon) after hearing his interviews this race

He must make it to Paris.

I totally agree. Hearing him say I really don't care again today. He has a year left on his contract...
The man hasn't raced in months I'll give him a few more days to blow off the ring rust and show something.

The positive thing is that he didn't crash. But his race feeling isn't good.

Similar situation of Alaphilippe. Alaphilippe is there, but Alphilippe at his best would have been at least third today. Roglic, in good form today, would have contested the stage.

We shouldn't just focus on the result. Feelings in the race are important.
Roglic's feelings haven't been good since Ayuso won the Giro stage, and he couldn't get past Bernal in a Roglic finish. Roglic would have been among the first today with minimal effort.

Another day another win for Rogli (no DNF) :)

Yes. It's all that matters in these first 9 stages.

We'll talk about the legs when he's actually been tested in a real ITT and on a real climb. There will be no hiding on Hautacam. That's where the 'truth' will be known. Even better if he can make it there in one piece and then we'll know what his level on a climb versus his rivals is.

He isn't happy racing for 3rd. I think he's made that perfectly clear. But that is the best he can expect when the 2 mutants are there. Maybe if he can win a stage his mental attitude will change.

He looked like he didn't want to get mixed up in a dicey sprint with not much at stake. A jumpy Alaphillipe can do that to a wise rider

Rog doesn't race a GT the way he races a one week stage race, he's way more patient and saves his bullets for specific moments. He doesn't chase classics type stage versus riders like VdP either.

Wisely doesn't chase MvP. It's like the dog that finally catches the truck....what do you do then?

I don’t think this is totally accurate. He has gone for - and won - many stages with punchy finales in GTs .

I can only remember the Vuelta from 5 years ago when he regularly clobbered Carapaz on punchy finales.

But from 2021 onwards it's mostly been about the big climbs. But I mean seriously, it's stage 2. I'm seeing all sorts of crazy overreactions on social media with people get upvoted hundreds of times for saying "Red Bull are washed and Lipowitz and Rog aren't chasing GC here" because... he didn't sprint versus MVdP and Pog today.

I mean come on, the overreactions every year are getting worse and worse. Here's the deal: this TdF is all about surviving for 11 stages then climbing until Paris. If he gets dropped on Hautacam by his podium rivals then yeah, sound the alarm and call an ambulance. Until then... let's wait for the ITT on Wednesday for a first real guesstimate regarding his form here.

Yeah he was a total nonfactor because he was completely asleep as his own DS said. That was not a surprising split.

AFAIK Remco said he was asleep? As for DS of either SOQ and RBH on stage 1, IMHO they continued to be focused on sprinters, once that ship has sailed, and as a result sacrificed 40s in GC, for nothing.

Even the commentators at Eurosport said it and they are normally completely useless when it comes to actual race commentary.

I read Adam Blythe was pissed at Rogla? You got to hand it to Rogla, he knows on how to deal with media.

All this talk about safety is of course total BS.

Agreed.

The team is just bad, Roglic is bad, the DS seem to have no control over their riders (see Lipowitz fighting alone for a long time, van Poppel leading out Meeus for 38th). That race is over for Red Bull before it really started. But they are really good at finding excuses. They will find ways to tell you why a eigth place from Lipo and a 3rd Place on Stage XYZ from Roglic means this Tour was a big success,

Nah, when we discussed this in the team thread some of you just didn't see it like that, that is the idea to bring a sprinter to the Tour, fighting for highest places in GC, that is just a big no go. And on why this is a bad idea, well, it was demonstrated clearly on stage 1. Lets not forget some even advocated to bring a couple of youngsters acting like loose cannons. So spare me the analysis on how now suddenly it's all bad. It luckily isn't. The team had everything under control today, Rogla was kept safe and at front and Lipo closed the gap, so Rogla could rest, they rode beautifully today. Keep it up and a stage win and more will come. As they took sprinter to the Tour then at least lets win tomorrow on stage 3 by hopefully not to hurt Rogličes GC ambitions in the process again. Stage 4 is on where we might see the return of the stomp, if not that then hopefully for Rogla to be fed well and to mainly rest, although penultimate climb on stage 4 is on where i expect some team support, otherwise Rogla might stretch his legs a bit and that would be a real shame.

Realistically stage 2 final ramp was not best suited for Rogla, still, the team and Rogla both did a great job today and on top of that such finales are not on what will decide the GC, this was just about some prestige.

Roglic got badly dropped on a short hill where Remco came back easily from a even worse position. If you still think that this is normal then nothing will change your mind until he gets completely destroyed by 10 guys on Hautacam.
This is probably where Roglic gets 4th on Hautacam which means you were confidently very wrong, and then claim you were right.

You are not really dropped, till you have a teammate around, utilising that advantage is proper GT GC way of doing it. Done properly on stage 2 and badly mismanaged on stage 1.
