ok new rule. Starting now, there will be a 24 hour limit on every pick. Meaning that is someone doesn't pick within 24 hours, whoever is next can go ahead.

I'd suggest 48, mainly as 24 would then make it awkward when I have two consecutive picks coming up if I'm away for a day or something (do I then end up with bonus time as I'd be the person who would get the pick that I missed at 70, because pick 71 is also me, whereas nobody else has that benefit). I PMed burning yesterday to let them know they're up.

Also picks are getting harder now many of the big guns are off the table :p I have four or five ideas lined up, though.

24 or 48, as long as there's a limit. We need to build the momentum back. It is too fun a thread to let it die. And many ways to steer it after the picks are done, sub plots and discussions. Poll open to the non-participants, fantasy course, et caetera...

Ahem. The rider I have in mind is wondering how many drugs he has to take to get picked in this draft. Guy's been getting up at 3 am every morning just to turn the sludge.

I think I have a route planned for this. It is not a typical Race Design Thread type route. Instead it is a tribute to the EPO era. Much as the Centenary Tour had its monuments to the original host cities, this route has a number of monuments to great moments in doping history and is an attempt to have something that resembles a classic EPO era Tour without blatantly biasing it in favour of any of us.
Then I suppose a MTF at Les 2 Alpes is in your plans. Why not make it all the way to the top of the Jandri, via Les Clapiers? Marco would love it, Cippo would not even get out of bed :D .

It would be wrong to impose a time limit on picks part way through the draft.

If one is imposed then I am out.
Then why not do like Libertine Seguros did? PM your pick (or a first, second choice) if you know you'll be unavailable? Imposing a time limit may seem wrong to you, but it's not right to go MIA for a week either. No knock on Zam here: if we didn't honor real life commitments, we'd be living under a bridge. But how about a PM to the two DS picking after you, for example? There has to be a little commitment on our part too...

I get the point on changing the rules partway through, and certainly it takes longer to make picks once the obvious picks are gone. But we want to keep the thread going. Burning, for example, has mentioned that on a previous occasion they held up the game as they had no idea it was their turn and therefore could people PM them to let them know when it was their turn? I PMed them a couple of days ago to let them know they're up, and they've logged in a few times since, but have not had the chance to make their pick yet.

Personally, as I've really enjoyed the game I tend to have a specific pick in mind, hoping they won't be taken before my turn, and then backup choices. Jalabert and Mauri were picks I was watching the picks prior to mine carefully hoping they would be overlooked. But it can't be overlooked that a few weeks back I was going to be gone for 3 days, and sent in a pick because 7 or 8 picks would be made before I got back. Tomorrow I go away for another 4 days and I haven't sent in a pick because there's still 5 picks to come before me and there's little chance those are all going to be done in the time frame. I thought the precedent of a week max that came with netserk being able to pick Il Falco in Zam's absence was reasonable.

Since this thread is not good for much else right now, j would just like to say, Sam and libertine, I have sent you pms.
Is your PM box full? Tried to answer but the message doesn't leave my outbox

You guys are so close to finishing it up. Would hate for the thread to die.

Lots of interesting ways the thread could play out after the teams are selected. Could be a great discussion leading up to the tour.

Ditto.

And, there are at least a couple of marvellous doping choices left. If I were still in line I would be anxious about getting a shot at them.

Dave.

Oh well, I select Honchar from '06 Tour as I really like him and he's a beast in flat.
IMO the 97 Giro Honchar is the best one to pick, 5th overall on the GC and beat Berzin by 1:08 in the 40km long ITT. In 1997 he also won TdS ITT when Ullrich was almost as fast, 2nd in the WC ITT only 3 seconds behing Jalabert and his first of 3 consecutive Chrono des Nations. He was a monster in 97, I don't know if is was his best year as a climber his best climbing performance but if you want a total beast on the flat you should pick the 97 Giro version.

i'll take Isidro Nozal (2003 Vuelta)

nozal_xoptimizadax--575x323.jpg

Nozal won the first TT by an astounding 1:20 over David Millar and took the leaders jersey all the way through three grueling stages in the Pyrenees and then won the second time trial as well, solidifying his lead on the GC which he held until it was finally ripped from his shoulders by Heras on a 11km mountain TT up Alto de Abantos on the penultimate day. Nozal's performance at the 2003 Vuelta is one of the most out-of-nowhere performances of all-time and I have no idea what in the world was running through his veins during that race, but he was never able to replicate anything close to that ever again. he also didn't take a shower during the entire race, or something like that.

Pick 61: ciranda - Oliviero Rincon ('95 Giro)
Pick 62: Tonton - Santiago Botero ('02 Tour)
Pick 63: Zam Olyas - Franco Chioccioli ('91 Giro)
Pick 64: Netserk - Paolo Savoldelli ('99 Giro)
Pick 65: burning - Sergei Honchar ('06 Tour)
Pick 66: zlev11 - Isidro Nozal ('03 Vuelta)
Pick 67: The Green Monkey -
Pick 68: the sceptic -
Pick 69: The Hitch -
Pick 70: Libertine Seguros -

For my next pick I am going for a rider who won four stages in the Tour de France in one year, sprinter Tom Steels from the 1998 Tour de France.

He won stages 1, 12, 18 and 21 up the Champs-Élysées

Ok I'm gonna go with another super domestique and pick Levi Leipheimer, 2007 tour.

Tour+de+France+Stage+Nineteen+Time+Trial+kBVlLEmppW6l.jpg

super strong engine who can also climb well. Should fit in well with my team and seems like a good pick this late in the draft.

that final ITT where he almost won the overall GC was one of the more blatantly doped performances of the 2000s.

My team so far:

Leader: Jan Ullrich
Alien climbing doms: Santi Perez and Chris Horner
Flat engines: Aitor Gonzalez and Levi Leipheimer
Stage hunter: Damiano Cunego
Alpha male: Super Mario

aside from cipo being lost and unloved my team seems strong in all kinds of terrain and maybe I can even afford to get cipo a lead out man later on..
