I'm rooting for Argentina, hopefully in the final against Brazil. Hell will break loose if Brazil loses that one

So what do the Italians think of this Italy team?. Imo it is one of the most underwhelming sides i have ever saw. You always have Italy as a fav or an outsider but if Eng and Uruguay went through it would not shock me atall.

Good grief how are we going to break that formation down lol, that is another thing Italian' always have, the wierd formations many of their teams play 3 at the back.

Reminds me of those old ac milan teams with 4 playmakers in midfield.

at least Italy will dominated possession with that team.. is it normal to start both Pirlo and Verratti at the same time?

That looks really strange. How is this supposed to work out exactly? Are Veratti and Marchisio supposed to provide any width or is that supposed to be done by the Full backs? I'm really puzzled what kind of tactics this is supposed to be.

Yeah but Milan always had a number 10 or a trequartista to spearhead the midfield. And Pirlo was at the back of the diamond not in the middle of it. But Veratti, Pirlo and Marchisio in one line, and no attaking midfielder? I don't get this at all...

it's crap.
But we always have an outside chance. It wouldn't surprise me if we end the group phase with 0 points, but it wouldn't surprise if we reach the semifinals either. It would surprise me if we actually win this, though.

I wouldn't say it's crap. Some good defenders and lots of good midfielders (De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio, Verratti are all good/amazing midfielders).

If its something like

-------------------De Rossi--------------------
Candreva----Pirlo----------Verratti----------Marchisio
-------------------Balotelli--------------------------

It might work.

I think the biggest question for Italy is, do they play with 1 or 2 strikers? Obviously they should play some ultra-central approach since they have so many strong midfielders and dont really have any good wingers/full backs. But if you play like this, then Balotelli better be in really great shape if its going to work.

Yes, this would make more sense. But it's not what Zam said it's supposed to look like. ;) It would be pretty strange though too to play a 4-1-4-1 with those kind of players. Edit: Oh i just saw that they played exactly like this when the were able to hold onto a draw against Luxemberg! One thing is for sure with this line up: they cannot by any means win a physical battle in the center of the field.

The ultra central approach still needs full back to provide width, you can't play a football without some sort of width. Looking at the squad I'd naturally come up with a 433, but I don't even know if the Italians have ever played this, and it would mean that their wingers would be important. But they only got 2 bloody wingers in the squad plus a million CM and no AM. That is a seriously strange squad in my opinion. Maybe they'll actually play a 4-3-1-2 of some sorts and but Veratti in CAM. Dominate posession and hope England don't hit em on the break. But to play possesion based football in Manaus might be a pretty stupid Idea.

It was a big mistake to play Rooney as the #10 in that match. He was too lazy to press Pirlo so he had all the time and space in the world to do whatever he wanted.

Even though its never going to happen, Id like Rooney to get dropped this time.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Barkley start and Rooney out wide on the left like he played against Ecuador. Barkley has bags of energy and would be able to run off Pirlo in an attacking sense if he plays behind Sturridge. Without the ball he can get back into a defensive shape to stay close to Pirlo. You see him with Everton where he has no problem in putting a defensive shift when needs be.

Hodgson was adamant in his press conference Pirlo won't get the same space this time. I think he will compromise his team a lot more tactically to deal with his influence.

No, actually, it won't. I live and work here in São Paulo, one of the highest altitudes for the Cup, and we're at 800m.

Heat and humidity, however, WILL be a factor, especially for those playing in Natal, Manaus and Fortaleza.

Done some further research, you are of course fully correct.:)
