ICLIC November 2013, a year ago. The Astana's Vinokourov is found in Montecatini Terme for the first meeting in view of the season 2014. Measurements of the clothes, cheerfulness, programs, even the traditional race go-karts electric. But when night falls, the hotel presents a very special guest: Michele Ferrari. The investigation, opened in 2010 by the prosecutor of Padua, Benedetto Roberti, was instrumental in the fall of Armstrong, who has lost everything: starting from the seven Tour de France. But it remains a second goal: to fit Dr. Ferrari and unmask the international network of money and doping. The Journal spoke of it since 2010, and in 2012 our colleague Luigi Perna 'dil circle narrows inexorably. And the chickens are coming home to roost. All. The black shadow of Michele Ferrari, the doctor Ferrara inhibited in life for the system-doping by Lance Armstrong, gets longer and longer sull'Astana. In recent years, investigators have not stopped to interceptions, seizures of money on Swiss bank accounts, to the testimonies of many runners. There are also photographs. marked "the ramifications of the system Ferrari, with the money of the image rights of the runners representing a valuable triangulation that enriched cyclists, teams, managers and medical. Ferrari you never leave, it is always "attenzionato" and that evening of November 2013, stationed outside the hotel in Montecatini Terme, there are investigators, photographing the "Dr. Myth" while talking with some members of the team. Ferrari home Astana. Big shot. Stop. PROHIBITION Step back. Ferrari is inhibited in life, can not attend licensed nor sporting venues. Those who attended, is disqualified see Filippo Pozzato, Michele Scarponi and Giovanni Visconti, all stopped three months. A license holder is obliged, if he sees Ferrari, to inform the authorities sports. Ferrari is a longtime friend of Alexander Vinokourov, the general manager of the Kazakh team Astana: positive for blood transfusion at the Tour de France 2007, disqualified, and then returned to the Olympic Games in London in 2012. In the past, they have been seen so many times in training the Teide (Tenerife) or Sankt Moritz, favorite retreat of the doctor Ferrara: talk about the minutes of Leonardo Bertagnolli and dell'ucrainio Volodymyr Bileka, for example. And nell'Astana ran the Czech Roman Kreuziger, now on trial at the sports Tas for alleged deterioration due to doping, his biological passport (as Franco Pellizotti, another customer of Ferrari: in 2010 it took two years, when he was the Liquigas ).
TESTS Ferrari home Astana is crucial to the investigators. The doctor, who lives in Lugano (Switzerland) and Ferrara, never moves randomly. But his presence puts even more in trouble Astana. No one felt compelled to leave the hotel, to leave and to inform the authorities sports? In this retreat was also Vincenzo Nibali. First episode, for Messina, the journey that would take him to win this year's Tour. The shadows are worse
The runners appearing in more than 500 pages of the information reached the cones by prosecutors in Padua: also some unexpected accusations, although the relief comes from the file submitted by the prosecutor to the prosecutor Roberti doping Coni: there is a line, nothing , which speaks of the relationship between Nibali and Ferrari, there has never been any contact between the runner and the doctor. SCENARIOS Yet the Astana, the team of the king of the Tour, in danger of disappearing from cycling if the ethical judgment is decisive, Wednesday will have no license World Tour Professional and then not even that, less than a total change of management. The UCI, the federciclo world, began a sharp turn for cleaning under the administration of President Brian Cookson. Vinokourov can not remain at his post. There are only the two brothers Iglinskiy positive erythropoietin and the three young men of the Continental team, caught for taking anabolic steroids: the UCI has all the cards, even those of the alleged "combine" orchestrated by Wine to buy Liege 2010 by Kolobnev (another cyclist Ferrari), the relationship with the prosecutor of Padua is very close. And take out the Astana would be hitting Ferrari. A message to cycling: you see what happens to you if you attended? In any case you announce dark times. In over 500 pages of the information reached the cones by prosecutors in Padua there are the names of 90 runners, many unsuspected. The truth will be very bitter....

It wasn't for doping. Ferrari stated in 2007 it's a new generation and doping is no more needed. He was there to give advice for training. ;)

Pretty sure they dope in countries other than Italy. If these guys are in fact doping with Ferrari, they are on the good gear doing the fine-tuned, well honed program.

Anyone beating these teams and claiming to be clean is full of it.

It amazes me that after all these years Ferrari is still going strong. Like him or not you gotta have a lot of respect for the man, he's kind of a legend now in the cycling world.

tbh I don't blame riders asking him for advice whether it's about doping or training/nutrition. Why mess around when u can go to the best. I would do the same if i was a pro-cyclist and had the money to afford his services tbh.

Ah, ok. I feel better now. :D

The number of teams is kind of crazy, though. Did Ferrari pick up where Fuentes left off?

Operacion Puerto was kind of crazy as it didn't just confirm that everyone was doing it, but that everyone was doing it through the same facilitator. Now the same thing with the guy who was the master of selectivity and exclusivity being the guy who takes care of everyone?

Pro cycling is crazy.

Yep, first it was Puerto then USADA and by the sounds of it CONI is just joining up the missing pieces in the jigsaw puzzle.

The bottom line is that its pretty much what everyone has suspected i.e. that whilst the cycling fraternity claims to be clean it is in fact business as usual.

Astana should be banned with immediate effect once evidence is passed over to the UCI. However I do feel sorry for Cookson in insofar as this is such a can of worms going right across the peloton where does he start? He cant have every team sanctioned but he has got to do something having read the allegations in GDS...............surely.

Why ban Astana and not the other teams on the list that are still current?

To ban Astana and not say Tinkoff, Rabo, Katusha, et al will be again a load of hypocrisy.

I know, seriously, right!? I mean you'd think the guy would get the hint "Hey, you know...I've kinda blown this sport up a teensy bit, plus I'm banned FOR LIFE. Maybe I should take up knitting?"

Granted, there is no $ in knitting :D
