Throwback monday

Parrulo linked this gem on the PRR section (for different reasons ofc) https://youtu.be/rmGBh0JURTQ?t=24m55s. Halfway through the video I literally fell of my chair laughing from hearing (or not hearing) the spanish commentators just before and after Froome's first attack on Semnoz in response to Purito's. I'll translate it roughly:

*Purito attacks*
Commentator 1: There goes Joaquim. Brave, brave Joaquim. [...] Joaquim hunting for a podium in the Tour.
*Quintana follows, Froome stays*
C1: And Froome I think, knows that these battles are not his business. I think this is the first time we're seeing Froome ride with intelligence.
*Froome dances away*
C1: Oh! Oh, well... (silence)
Commentator 2: Uffh...
C1: (agape) ...But what a change of pace...
C2: Blghr...
C1: But what a bizarre thing.
C2: He always does that, at first he...
*Froome flies by Purito and Quintana*
C2: ...oh, he's going to win the stage.

Their tone and their obvious disbelief of what they're witnessing makes it all more priceless.

Noticed that as well in one of those close ups. Grinning whilst looking at his stem, bobbing his head from side to side as he pedals like Lance. The guy really is a freak show.

Agreed on Froome getting creepier. Some parallels with Midousuji! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ09ZDqqQ30

Am the only one who is willing to admit they watched some of this series????

We can only wish Froome had that much style.

Froome might be the death knell for cycling. Lying doper. Horrific style. Complete douchebag.

At least Armstrong looked like he should be riding a bike...

We're gonna have to move all races to the island, where the "real fans" reside.

it's funny how people make all these connections inside their mind
At least Armstrong was able to (mostly) keep his lies consistent...

Oh that makes it so much better.

That's hyperbole rubbish.

True. Makes Froome's attempts to sweep things under the rug so much funnier though.

It's the interetubes...welcome to it!

...and only the first was intended hyperbole, the last is spot on.

Love this bit from the cyclingnews article on the stage:
As a seated Froome forged clear while spinning his legs at an improbable cadence, van Garderen was joined by Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) and the hugely impressive Simon Yates (Orica-GreenEdge) but they were losing ground all the way.

The text under the photo set the tone: "Chris Froome points to the sky and to the team sponsor, Sky". :D

The entire article is unusually eloquent and witty for cn article. Noticed this before for some articles, wonder who the author is.

things are shaping up quite nicely with froome it seems: back to back stage wins, and pseudoscientist vayer calculated a casual 6,6w/kg for the last 4,5ks of yesterday. and he was not even breathing that heavily while pedalling all over the shop. now, the others will surely join the party in order to not be pulverised.

add in a few race savvy attacks by which the other GC men gain some time over froome, and he might have to actually try. so might this be the year that cleans performances surpass the doped ones, as per brailsford's prediction?

Looking at the long distance weather forecasts for France in July, a lot of tailwinds to be expected. :D

I have the Windy Mountain thread bookmarked, prepared to resume the discussion should there once again be a tailwind that follows the Dawg around.

Dr Michele Ferrari's blog about Froome breathing technique (from 2013)
the real Dr Ferrari, not some twitter funny alter ego

"i believe that this breathing technique, adequately trained and associated with a strengthening of the respiratory muscles, may bring advantages over an uncontrolled breathing, so frequent even among top athletes"

mind, he's on the juice like the others, I am not exchanging breathing with peds.

I read this. And then later tried it. Your mouth / throat is more open tilting your head back than down. It's like closing a pipe or pinching off a tube when putting your head down.

I tried it too, and it did not work for me either. I thought it could be a personal thing, but really, thinking about it, it's simple human anatomy. If you put your head back (which is basically what you do when looking straight ahead on a bike) the oral cavity aligns with the trachea whereas if you keep your head in a normal position which would translate to staring at your stem on a bike, there's a 90 degree angle. So naturally the air flow will be less obstructed in the head back position. You can test it out for yourself, see in which position you feel you can breathe deeper/more easily, head back or head in normal position.

sure there will be a thread about the guy who is motopaced by wonderboy somewhere

Found it http://forum.cyclingnews.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=25891 anyway since he's merican they all stopped in 2006/2007 etc :D
At least Van Garderen had the decency to be a world class junior and has never had to rely on motorbikes to make time cuts. Ditto Yates (2nd 2013 l'Avenir) and Rui Costa

If you still can't work out why Froome draws so much attention, I have to start wondering if you caught the short bus to school.

I agree with your post, yet Adam finished 2nd, Simon 10th at the Tour de l'Avenir 2013.

Yet your guy beat the rider motopaced by Wonderboy...

Talk about having it both ways... :D
Welcome to the psyche of the average English sports fan. They win, it's in spite of the opposition's cheating and are simply in their rightful place in spite of all the adversity. They lose, and they are the plucky loser who fought all the way and were only defeated by the opposition's dirty handed tactics.

Follow sporting events like the Ashes and the football World Cup (from an English perspective) and you'll get it ;)
