Time to bump this thread. A lot to work through. I’m not sure the top 2 has ever been more clear and the next 8 less clear. Personally, for mine I’m factoring in the rolling 3 GTs and one-week stage races. Bias toward actual results, but not a rote recital of recent palmares. Here’s what I’ve got; flame away.
  1. Tadej Pogacar
  2. Jonas Vingegaard
  3. Florian Lipowitz
  4. Simon Yates
  5. Primoz Roglic (would likely be 3rd if not for bad luck in the Giro)
  6. Jaoa Almeida (based on one-week)
  7. Remco Evenepoel (hurt by the fact that it doesn’t seem like the team is totally clear on why he performed the way he did)
  8. Isaac Del Toro
  9. Oscar Onley
  10. Richard Carapaz
Last one out: Juan Ayuso

Kinda think O'Connor should be above atleast a couple of those based on final results if nothing else. Certainly above riders who didn't even podium a GT.

That‘s a possible GC results ranking, but for a power ranking it doesn‘t convince me at all. But I wouldn‘t even try my hand at this because I don‘t know how to compare Lipowitz and Del Toro for example and I can‘t possibly tell who‘d do how well if they all entered the same race. I just have to say, Simon Yates being good on one day has brought him a lot of success but has also made his actual power potential overrated.

Del Toro is better than Simon Yates even if Yates was the rider to win the Giro

@Red Rick because Yates wasn’t great in the Tour after the Giro, he must not have been that good in the Giro? Not sure that follows.

Having said that, if you broaden the view and take into account more context, I’d pick several over Yates in the hypothetical next GT.

I‘d agree with that but based on the mountain performances, Carapaz also has to be up there with Del Toro. Maybe put Del Toro ahead because of verstility but not by much. I can‘t tell at all if Oscar Onley would have won the Giro but on a Giro with only two decisive mountains, it‘s a bit of a lottery anyway. Simon Yates came into decent shape in the third week after not being close earlier, I‘m not sure I even believe he could win that GT on a well-paced route where the superpeak isn‘t as effective. Oh, and we shouldn‘t even think about that Giro and Landani but we should think about his power.

Carapaz' level was a little underrated in the giro, he was attacking over and over again every time the mountains went up and from distance with very little support, his best domestiques being 'Honore' and 'Rafferty'. I think he is a bit above both Yates and Del Toro. He was at least as good as Yates' on that final stage but needed snookers so was trying to use him instead of catch him. I think by the end of next year Del Toro will be above everyone bar the top 2.

There was a decisive 1 hour climb in the Giro and Simon Yates put 1'40 into his closest competitors. He also dropped Del Toro on the other big mountain stage that was actually raced hard.

If I'm not putting Yates on top of the list of riders who finished the Giro, then the Giro results don't matter, and then what is even the point of discussing this because I can just look at the TdF results.

Feel like I've forgotten loads of riders.
The Problem is you do this after the vuelta and put Enric mas like top 8 but after le tour he's not in top 20

I haven't bothered to check all the respective results but how is Ayuso above Remco?

In one of the two mountain stages that actually mattered, Simon Yates was closer to Egan Bernal and Damiano Caruso’s corpse than Carapaz and behind Michael Storer and in the other he gained 1‘40“ on a climb where his opponents lost two minutes with looking at each other and starting the climb with a full sprint that Simon Yates didn‘t quite follow all the way. Meanwhile on Stage 7 or 11 Yates didn‘t look good at all. I just think that a GC power ranking shouldn‘t be the single performance with tactical effects ranking.

Good thing the Giro d'Italia GC measures a 3 week race.
