Sad story from Paolini. I'm not going in to details else this has to go to the clinic, but I'm going to miss him this year.

It is great that he is doing his best to get clean. I am cheering him on and hope he succeeds

2007 Australian National Champ Darren Lapthorne retires:

A good guy, who had a decent career.

Been waiting for this to be official as it was expected. Great guy who went through some difficult situations but still worked hard and was a solid pro, Drapac will miss him
A smart rider who made the most of his ability, good road captain too. Felt for him after he lost his sister in such public circumstances.

Not a bad mix of stages for an early season race. The Coll de Fredes is fairly long but gradual so will likely be a completely different affair to the Xorret del Catí stage. That's about a perfect stage for the early season too, tough enough to guarantee gaps but not high enough altitude to be a risk or long enough to discourage people from entering. 16km of TT and a couple of flat stages, pretty decent as a whole. They really ought to use the same scale for all of the stages though, makes it very misleading.

Giro wildcards will be announced on Friday or Monday and apparently one Italian team will be left out.

Please RCS, don't invite Bora, they'll probably get a TdF wildcard, so it's pointless.

I dont think anyone even thought about inviting Bora-Argon18 for the Giro. They have their Tour place (with Cofidis, Fortuneo, DirectEnergie)

edit. I forgot DimensionData is now a WT team, so their Giro spot is sure.

Yes, it would be pointless.
I wouldn't mind CCC instead of Nippo Vini Fantini to be honest, they have Rebellin for the hilly stages + Hirt, De La Parte and Szmyd (I know, he's way past his prime) for mountain raids, they'd be a decent pick.
They should give a wildcard to Funvic because of the Rio Olympics, that would be fun. :D

I expect CCC and CSF to be invited anyway. They've got the most quality for the Giro in their current line-up. Hopefully this time around Rebellin is gonna start never mind!

Then, Southeast is guaranteed as they won the Copa Italia classification. But I wouldn't mind and I ain't gonna be surprised if RCS still squeezes them.

Realistically either Androni or Nippo is left out. To be honest I tend to believe Savio is out already. Nippo supports the Italian youth, while Androni hasn't delivered much at all in the past editions of the Giro. Cunego strikes me as a more worthy veteran to be invited than Pellizotti nowadays as well.

Of course it would be better if there were 5 wildcards like last year and Androni was still invited instead. But it ain't that way.

I think that Androni are on the hotseat, Nippo also have a big Japanese sponsor that seems to think about making long term investments. The bad thing about Androni missing is the fact that we won't be able to see Torres at the Giro.

The finale of Paris-Roubaix is about to change drastically. Not this year, but in a few years, maybe 2022. It looks like the two star sector of Willems à Hem will be paved, as it is an important link in the region and furthermore riders were riding sideways of the pavé. The sector that will replace Willems à Hem will be 3200 Meters long. Les amis de Paris-Roubaix have already started working on it. Of course this will change everything in the race.

I thought they literally weren't allowed pave the sectors.

Anyway... got, not so much a piece of general news, but a question:

Should we start those Last X to Y threads?

The last two wild cards of the Tour of Poland go to Gazprom-Rusvelo and ONE. In total there will be six pro-conti teams at this race plus a national Polish selection:
CCC Sprandi Polkowice
Verva-Active Jet
Bardiani-CSF
Novo Nordisk
Gazprom-Rusvelo
ONE

The roads will be crowded.
