In the same way that Cobo should be stripped of the Vuelta because a tiny minority of his fans threw death threats at Froome

I said "threatened". Make it know to the fans that abuse of refs is unacceptable.

You have a point though. Threatening them that they will play games in empty stadiums if there is no respect to refs, would be a better idea, for now.

Evans up for Laureus sportsman of the year award

against - Usain Bolt (athletics), Novak Djokovic (tennis), Lionel Messi (soccer), Dirk Nowitzki (basketball) and Sebastian Vettel (Formula One)

http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-sport/cadel-evans-up-for-top-world-sport-award-20111215-1ox54.html

Bolt and Vettel on there show that its all about celebrity.

As for Cadel its good news and bad news. Well it would be good news if Cadel had been the best cyclist of the season. But he so clearly was not. It seems though that Cadel only has to win the Tour once to get nominated whereas everyone else had to win it at least twice.

Im hardly Gilberts biggest fan but he should be on there instead of Evans.

Id give Djokovic the award, or maybe Cadel.

Guess we know whose going to win it next year. Though. Phelps can win 50 gold medals, so long as Bolt does the arrow and hugs a bear between his 9 second effort, he aint going to win.

I would go for Vettel, Evans, Messi, Djokovic, Bolt ( only because it's not an Olympic year and i don't care for warm-up events ) and Dirk who???

Evans does more to deserve such an award in his pre season training camp than vettel has in his entire life.

At least this year he squashed the competition and blasted everybody regardless of what car they were in. Last year he stumbled across the line at the last second despite several attempts to throw the championship away, because others contrived to throw it away better, and still got voted 4th best sportsman of the year.

if messi is in an award he should always win it

No. Soccer players shouldn't be given awards considering when somebody touches them they roll around like somebody has chopped their leg off.

Don't agree a motor sports person should get an award either. Seriously, too many uncontrollable variables for my liking.

I understand this post will be very unpopular.

way to generalize (not even about messi btw). Your ignorance lets you down again.

Think about it like this, soccer is the most played competitve sport around the world. Even in australia, despite the media's propaganda soccer has the highest participation rate. Especially in junior level.
Yet with all these millions atop of millions of people playing football, Messi is far and away the best of the best. Say what you want, but for a sport where kids are pulling tricks out oo thier a$ses by the age of 2 and growing up with only a soccer ball to become the greatest at said sport is something incredible... and it is not like a kaka, where he is the best one year, he has been consistantly the best for a number of years now.

Hate on the sport all you want, it is just sad that you can't appreciate other people passions and such. You don't have to like it, but I don't go hating on rugby because I don't like it. But whatever it is a forum, you can bad mouth all you want, but I'm gonna respond in kind :p

Typical brainless acf response.

It's an award that rarely gets given to foreigners. And it's even rarer for someone to receive it if he's not a politician or Statesman. So, it's incredibly prestigious for someone like Merckx to receive this award.

And I think you'll agree with me that politicians and statesmen are everything except heroes.

Ché Guevara is considered a tragic hero by many yet has a lot of blood on his hands. Fidel Castro is not considered a hero, but he would have been considered a hero if he had died after the successful revolution. It just depends what you see as a hero I guess ;)

I personally don't hold much value to the word hero. It's an award for people who have accomplished exceptional things.

Ferminal, by the looks of that article about Meyer it seems he may be looking more at the road in 2012 instead of the Track. What do you think?

For a while there has been an indication from Meyer to try and get in the Tour squad, although every says they are trying to race the Tour. Having Paris-Nice and the Dauphine in his program wouldn't necessarily interfere with the track, there would be enough time after them to have a run at Melbourne and London. But doing the Tour... it's hard for someone to be a serious contender for a track spot in London when the month before they've been rolling around France not a velodrome. You only have to look at GT staying away from the Tour. The competition for spots in the Australian team is such that anyone only half committed may be overlooked.

On the other hand, Hepburn, Howard, Durbridge may all too suffer a bit of Green Fever. I think it would be a bit sad for the track program, for all the hard work done since 2008, that they run out of gas before London. I think it's all up in the air still, I'd hazard a guess that Meyer isn't putting his hand up for the omnium though, and will just try and sneak into the TP squad by doing the minimum required on the track.

Brainless? I am not denying he isn't a great player but I don't like the way Soccer players and sometimes even AFL players behave through acting. I think it is a low act and when I see that I question if they deserve accolades. Are you going to have a go at The Hitch for ultimately justifying my opinion? I bet you aren't because The Hitch has what is known as 'street value'. Plenty more of examples of it. People can like Soccer/Football but I don't. Don't be such a melodramtic idiot like you often are. Again, I do not have to like the sport. Get that through your thick skull.
