Turns out ColoQuick's Adam Holm Jørgensen was pretty badly hurt from crashing on stage 1 of Tour of Norway:

Six fractured vertebrae, seven broken ribs and a broken collarbone. In addition, a punctured lung and internal bleeding from one kidney.

From the article it seems like he has some broken bones in his face that require no movement to fix so that‘s why he‘s in the coma. Also, he could get lost in the rainforest and the news would come quicker than from Poland. And the Tour de Pologne is obviously afflicted by some Voodoo curse.

It seems absolutely wild to me that you can just keep a man in a coma for two weeks due to broken bones without getting his permission (maybe they did, in which case it seems less wild). I've never heard of something like that.
I reckon his 2 fractured vertebrae were the main reason and not his facial wounds.
Doctors know best in all fairness, it's possible his family was notified or consulted but sometimes doctors need to make that decision on the spot.

That's the doctors' decision, and if they did it, it was because there was no other option to guarantee his health and allow him to operate.

The final operation lasted 11 hours. The injuries were undoubtedly significant.

More details...

“Filippo was conscious on the ground for more than 40 minutes before he was taken to hospital. Mauro [Gianetti] took charge of the situation, but it’s not clear why he was loaded into an ambulance and then not taken to the nearest hospital. They waited for another one to arrive,” Agnostini said.
