kinda nuts to realize if Thomas was called up to the Tour he could very well be above Bernal right now.

In reality GT isn't suitable for the course this year. He can climb, but on longer type tempo climbs. This tour has some long climbs...but punchy. Keeping up with the top few GC riders would be a stretch. Only due to the steep parts were he would have a hard time. However, I agree that he might be in a higher place than Bernal.

The biggest miracle to me is that he's managed to stay upright long enough to amass the incredible palmarès that he has, especially when you consider he only really converted to specialising in stage racing because he kept wasting his classics seasons by smashing everybody to all parts in races like E3 and then crashing out before we could see him when it mattered in de Ronde or Roubaix.

Couldn’t watch the stage today and when I’d heard that Thomas had fallen in the neutral zone I thought ‘here we go again’.

Having watched the video of the crash, there is very little that could have been done. He went down hard and he’s lucky he’s not got broken bones, rotten luck and I guess it might be time to focus on 2021 and making sure he is in form at the correct time.

Could get out an maybe try for La Vuelta?

Nasty crash. I'm not a fan of his, not one bit, but it hurts when you think about the amount of work and preparation that it takes to contend in a GT. All that wasted because of lady bad luck.

Welcome to my world, GT fans  . Now it's the debate "live to fight another day" and quit or "finish what you started" and stay. Lose-lose proposition: quit and crows will chant "weak, weak, weak", or stay and be an also-ran.

If the Bernal model is the model, GT won't finish Il Giro. And that could be "Ineos is the new Movistar" showing up with three leaders at La Vuelta.

I want to see him race the cobbles again before the end of his career. With this bad luck at the Giro today he might find the lifestyle and the sacrifices of another season built around GT GC racing too much with all the talk of him not enjoying the monk life enabling that. After all, Ineos could really need some northern classics results again and Doull and Rowe seem to miss the last bit needed in the big races like Flanders and Roubaix. Thomas got the engine, previous results in semi classics and races like E3 and would be a wasted talent without returning to those races. Might still super dom Bernal at the Tour or have a go at the Vuelta later in the year (Don't think he cares about that race though).

Four if Bernal decides to join Vuelta too. It would be hilarious if half of Ineos's team are GT winners.

GT was in a perfect position to win this, really unlucky. It also might affect the race as GC contenders don't have to attack that much to recover time.

I think Ineos need to have G ride some CX and MTB. All the computer staring tempo road riding and track riding has left him without the skills to control the bike. Be like Wout, MvdP, Alaphillepe, or Pogacar. All these lads raced CX and they are way more skilled at handling a bike.

Yes but I don't see why they wouldn't give him permission.

Thomas and Ineos will have to make a determination on if it's possible for him to recover and have any form by the time la Vuelta starts and as the start list has to be in by likely mid week next week, it may end up with them making that determination and getting the request in fast enough for the UCI to make a decision on it.

Well said, my sentiments exactly.

And then return to the track for another gold medal in 2024.

Yesterday’s crash was a freak accident not much anybody could have done if you see the footage.
