probably because he thought he could hold it. Taking a dump is never a good idea during a race.

I think the worst thing for Dumoulin isn't the 2 minutes he dropped on Quintana and Nibali, but how hard those 2 minutes were for him and not his opponents.

Still rooting for him hard though.

Yup, he also didn't seem to blame anyone but himself really.

A bit disheartened that he looked so resigned. It seems to me he feels he lost the Giro today, I hope he's wrong.

Why did he lose the Giro, if he's not ill he's still the favourite even though Nibali looks really dangerous.

I'm not saying he's lost the Giro, I'm saying the look on his face and the way he responded in the interview made it seem like he believes that right now. But that's also the emotion of the moment, he might feel totally different once he's on his bike again tomorrow.

Oh c'mon. Show me the unwritten rule that you must not attack if the leader has to take a sh*t. I think they were already too generous to not do an all out attack as soon as Dumoulin stopped.
Don't get me wrong. I wish they had waited, I really want him to win, but saying other teams are unsportsmanlike because of this is nonsense.

they don't have to wait, but Tom waited for Quintana on Sunday. It's always the same story with Movistar, profit from other rider's misfortune and never return favors. Can't imagine them being very popular in the peloton.

They slowed down for a few milliseconds, yes. They could have let Tom catch on and gone full gas after that. This half-arsed approach was nonsensical.

Horse. ***. Nobody asked Dumoulin to do anyone a favour. Trying to buy yourself a favour by waiting in a situation where there's realistically not much to gain by riding is Armstrong style. I'm not saying that's why he did it, mind you, but as I said yesterday, no one should feel compelled having to return a favour, it's poison for the race.

I'm not really sure stopping earlier would've been a good idea for Dumoulin. He was pretty much isolated. If he'd done so with 80km to go and had been unable to get back he would have been in real trouble.

If he took the break earlier he would have had to rely on others waiting for him because there was still so far to go.

Then he realised that actually he really couldn't. Pretty simple.

Holding that for more then an hour while climbing one of the most difficult climbs in the Giro? Yeah... That seems really reasonable...

Well, that happened.

Great ride by Nibali. Quintana did a good job keeping up after the attack, but I think he should've attacked earlier (then again he's trying to save up for the Tour...). Very unfortunate day for Dumoulin, even though he kept up reasonably well despite being on his own for most of the final climb; he might end up paying for the effort later, but then again tomorrow he might catch a break. He still has a good chance to win, but it all depends in whether he can recover before stage 18.

I think Nibali might be the favorite to win the race, but will need another big move on Quintana. There are big descents before the final climbs in the Ortisei and Asiago stages, where he could have an advantage. Quintana's probably making his move on the summit finish stages (Piancavallo?). Looking forward for the next stages, particularly Ortisei and the Milano ITT.

Fair point. He had no help anyway, and as long as Amador and Stevie were up the road, Bahrain, Katusha & Co had a "legit" reason to press on.

This exactly, if he'd stopped earlier and the other teams decided to go full gas he'd have lost twice as much time today.

If he took the break earlier he would have had to rely on others waiting for him because there was still so far to go.

This is where his team really hurt him. If he still had 3/4 riders with him he could've easily taken the break a climb earlier, and gotten back on.

That's not what I implied. It's just that you know even before something happens, that Movistar will NEVER wait or do someone a favor. That's just their way of racing.

It's much more reasonable to expect the others to wait for 30 seconds in the valley though, than to expect them to wait at the start of the final climb of the queen stage, when everyone already has their clear tactical ideas.

Yup, and stopping 40km earlier is assuming they'd wait for him and not get rid of him on the flat. Considering it was Movistar riding, would you take that risk?

What really annoys me about this stage is that Quintana still gained 2 minutes on Dumoulin without attacking early. I really wished they would get punished for their conservative racing. Then again, let's be happy Quintana didn't attack early because otherwise Dumoulin would probably have lost 5 minutes.

Well, they actually did wait today. You might argue that they didn't wait long enough, but there's no question they waited.
