Froome casually popping in with the 6th best time ever on Zoncolan after the crashes, a month and a half away from TDF peak and after looking like a sprinter on the climbs up until now. Far and away the greatest performance of his career. The Chronicles of the Sandshoes Miracle just got a new chapter, f*ck it never mind new chapter, it got a sequel. Froome must use Calgon on his crank.

He wasn't that far ahead of his rivals though. Plus the pace didn't seem to be on during the rest of the stage.

Not even close to the same level as AX3 and PSM imo.
Considering his form in the previous 13 stages, I'd say it is up there

Necessary reminder that Froome stole pet rabbits belonging to pre school children and fed them, alive, to a snake. Great guy.

How is that bad?
Reconsider your values
Aren't value systems are all relative? I imagine Froome, who grew up a stone's throw from a national park where lions and leopards were killing things every day, has a far more realistic view of how nature works, than the sanitized, anthropomorphic nonsense that exists in Europe.

The stealing part isn't cool, although I imagine it's heavily embellished by now.

Well, now we know Yates is not only the best puncheur in this Giro but also great climber.
Dumo much more better than I expected but will not win it overall. Pinot/Pozzo more or less as I thought.
And Froome - incredible win! He should be at podium but if his shape just started to peak.. who knows what will happen.

Yes, there’s that. But then you have to flip the logic to accomodate “nature” as such.

And you’re saying there’s no anthropomorphism in Africa?

I don't think that his form was quite as bad as people were making out. It's nothing compared to Nibali in the 2015 Tour who lost about four minutes on the first MTF (and later won on La Tousierre). And Nibali didn't have any crashes from what I can recall. With crashes, you will either continue to get worse after having them, or your form will gradually recover. Froome might have been ready to do a strong ITT on stage 1, we'll never know. Then he had another crash on stage 8. He has since had a rest day, plus stage 12 wasn't GC decisive, and stage 13 was almost another rest day.

Actually Nibali crashed.

Everybody grinding up the climb except for Froome.
Dumoulin has to take 3 mins in the TT to win and probably afford to lose 1:30 in the coming mountains
Yates has to lose only 2 mins in the TT to be confident of winning but his third week performance is an engima. Surprisingly Yates has taken 26 s in bonifications. If he takes another 30s then he would probably win.

He's taking at least 35 seconds that I can think of

TT won't be enough for Tom, like last year he needs to win time uphill at some point also. I think Thursday suits him, however Friday looks monstrous.
Definitely. It will be tough for Tom, but not impossible. Yates the clear favorite though.

Yates will have huge pressure in the TT. As of today I think Dumoulin is still in a good position. Dumoulin knows how to finish off a three week race but Yates is yet to do it. Should be interesting. Froome and Sky should also be more involved now.

Erm, does it look like I'm saying that? Africa is a pretty big and diverse place about which to make any generalisation.

[mod hat off]

This was an episode of the twilight zone today. Froome getting back in the picture was something that I didn't expect. Not a good day as a fanboy, since my chouchou struggled. So did Carapaz, whom I expected to be in the mix for the stage win. Yates'performance was predictable, so was Dumoulin's. Good day for Pozzo. Aru gave everything he had...yikes. I expected a little better from Dennis. All in all, Il Giro just got a lot more interesting.

Podium predictions, anyone?

I think the rejuvenated Froome has this one in the bag. He'll take time on Yates in the TT and finish the miraculous comeback on the final mountain stages in week 3. Yates to finish 2nd. Tom D. to round out the podium.

No, it looks as if you said naif Kenyan Froome had no exposure to anthropomophism. I can read the post again. Or you.

So when do value ststems adhere?
You've kind of missed the point. I'm simply saying that value systems are not an absolute thing. Feeding a live rabbit to a snake is not inherently wrong. After all, you are saving the snake's life by doing so. Value systems are flexible social constructs dependent on time and place, so it's wrong to impose your own value system on someone in completely different circumstances imo.

Anyway, this isn't really the place for such a discussion so I'm finished with it now.

I hate Froome. I really do. But his revival comes at the perfect moment. He is crazy enough to attack with 50k to go, and he'll need it. Him being in contention for the overall gives an extra dimension to the race.

I don't think Froome even needs a crazy attack actually. If he's suddenly the best climber in the race again, he's most likely the best TTer also, or at least second best. And if he takes a minute, minute and a half, off everyone but Dumoulin, he's absolutely in full contention again.

This is not the place, no. I’m not remotely missing the point.

Feeding a snake a rabbit is already a value leap. You’re missing that step. Snakes and rabbits on their own are nature.

You seem to be missing that anthropomorphism.

3:10 is still a huge gap. I'm gonna go with Yates, Dumoulin, Froome.

Re: Giro 2018 stage 14:S.Vito Tagliamento-Monte Zoncolan 186

I was actually cheering for Froome, mainly because Yates already has two stage wins. I wasn't expecting Simon Yates to have a really good shot at winning a GT. I thought Adam Yates was the better climber and Simon was the better puncheur, but now he seems to be quite complete. We'll see how much time he'll loose in the TT unless he'll loose any, then he could give himself a Simoni type of get out of jail card.

It was a good watch. At first it looked like Poels and Froome doing an Angliru, but then Froome actually delivered. The fight for the stage win with Yates was really good. While i've seen some praise for Dumoulin for limiting the damage well i would personally give Rohan Denis and Bilbao props as they dropped before Aru and Carapaz but managed to keep their loses under 2min. I expected Carapaz to suffer but not as much. Pinot a bit dissapointing. If Pinot and Pozzovivo switched places it would be up with my predictions.

Wonder if someone like Aru will try something on Sant'Antonio tomorrow as i expect the GC battle should be on the lower slopes of Forcella Zovo.
