Yeah, can't really blame Pietrobon given his situation. Nevertheless, still prefered that his move would not work out and happy that Thomas won. Great to see the peleton beat. I think apart from the Catalunya stage where Plapp caught the break and pulled for them that's the first WT pure breakaway stage win this year?

Didn't expect people to be so annoyed with Pietrobon - he's a PCT rider without a career win against a multiple time track world champion and Valgren. Of course he needs to wheelsuck if he's going to even the slightest chance of winning.

To be fair to pietrobon he only stopped working when it was clear they weren't getting caught. He did a great attack as well, if the fdj guy didn't commit to chasing he would have won

It was like 2.5km and the gap was 30s. It was the right move and there was nothing wrong with it. The weakest guy does the least, and tries to win. It's fair.

Nope it was father out than 2,5 km I am pretty sure. But if it was only the last 2.5k fair enough, I'm less annoyed by it, but to me it felt like just leeching of the others work to get a chance you contribute litte or nothing to in the end.

I understand the rational behind doing it - but I think it's allowed to be happy this tactic doesn't win.

I love that in this era where the sprinters teams give breaks no more than a minute and a half instead of what used to be 5-15 mins the break wins so much more often now. I feel like I've seen this result about a dozen times in the last 5 years

Pietrobon a popular target but the thinking man knows it's Pieter Serry and Amanuel Gheberigzabier murdering everyone's legs on that first climb for no reason, send all hate their way.

It's actually only his second top-4 at this level, the other being a second place from another early break at Suisse. Good rider, but a bit of a French race merchant and also someone who got most of his results in a single season (2022).

Yeah he almost had a Tour stage a few years back IIRC, one of those "ASO giving B+B riders questionable moto-draft" stages

Nah, it's Paleni he needs to send a gift basket to. That guy chased for no reason just to get 4th. Like WTH, there is not a different outcome for Paleni in that situation except maaaybe third. Was he doing it just to spite Pietrobon? At least Pietrobon tried to win.

Inasmuch as Valgren chased it was because the race was his to lose.

And for anyone who thinks you have to contribute equally then let the strongest legs win in the end, (a) stop watching cycling, (b) Pietrobon is visibly several inches taller than anyone else in that break, so he was providing better shelter (and receiving less draft) than all the others all day.

Not sure it was smart to do a "Sky Train Tribute" on the long climb, and seemed to mess around during the chase. I suppose they thought catching the break was a done deal.

Alpecin got that stage wrong - Why attack a climb with over 100kms to go and bring back the break? All you do is open yourself to another break. Much easier to control the break all day and you have a guaranteed sprint finish.

What a win for Thomas and Cofidis. He instigated the move off the front then watched one rider take a flier and attempt a long sprint, didn't panic and judged it perfectly Will be a few miffed team managers at the dinner table tonight but kudos to the break.
