Good decision though. It's not about the time loss (or gain), it's about the precedent the rule creates whereby all GC leaders, their teammates, sprinters + their teammates would be racing to the line in a sprint stage.

Aka deliriously dumb - especially after there's already been a crash in the bunch.

Bad rules must give bad results. They wanted to change a completely fine rule, then they better own the result of that change.

Today wouldn't be the day to do it, but sometime, just to give the riders a warning against complacency, they should apply strictly the clause:
will of remaining with the riders in whose company he was riding at the moment of the
incident.

I do not believe that it is the intention of the rule to legitimise soft-pedalling of the last 2km by half the field, because of something that need not have made much difference at all them. We have all seen how quickly and effectively the peloton can pass a fallen rider any farther than 3 km from home.
 
Congratulations to Olav Kooij for winning the sprint and a nice leadout effort done by van Aert.

This is on how sprint stages will likely look like in the future, GC times taken some km before the finish line, to reduce the initiative for GC riders and teams to be there, at the finish line, sprinters to take over. As for that rule they made just because of Rogla and now basically admitting they were just wasting everybody time, sometimes i guess you need to waste a bit of effort, to realise you are acting wonky.
 
I didn't expect there to be a grand total of one leadout man left with 600 metres to go. That was an uncharacteristically awful job by most teams, all too scared of going too late so they all went too early.

On the plus side, that did limit the speed going into the final corner...

For what it's worth, the corner being so sharp means that the speed would in any case be quite low in the event of a crash there. I agree it wasn't ideally planned and that we probably got as lucky as we could get with one rider crashing early causing the bunch to stretch, but I don't think it was as dangerous as you made it out to be. If it had been sloping downhill toward the bend, that would have been something else entirely.
