I knew my comments about Cunego in the CQ thread would come back to haunt me. Chapeau

Now you must take a Cunego Avatar.

I think this is the photo we're looking for here. If Serpa gets to ride for himself at the Giro, I'll be super happy. In any case I have to admit they look like a solid team: like Movistar, no clear leaders, but deep.

Won the Vuelta a Asturias last year on Loule, if that helps.

Tino was still with Caisse d'Epargne in 2007, but like Rubén Plaza was not welcome at some major races (unlike Plaza, however, he wasn't planned to be taken to many). He won the Euskal Bizikleta but the team had no interest in keeping him on.

In 2008 he joined LA-MSS. You know all about the 2008 LA-MSS team, the Vuelta a Asturias (Tino was one of the four in that infamous road stage-turned-TTT), Bruno Neves, and perhaps also the GP Rota dos Móveis, which was also a LA-MSS 1-2-3. Zaballa has the win for this after teammate Pedro Romero was banned, believe it or not.

As you know, LA-MSS were promptly raided, and the team barred from most of the second half of the season. Tino kept himself busy by taking up cyclocross.

In 2009, he followed sponsor LA Aluminios when they replaced Fercase as the title sponsor of the LA-Paredes Rota dos Móveis team, but frankly his year was pretty mediocre, including a very disappointing Volta where he was little more than breakaway fodder, only enlivened by a surprise 2nd in the Spanish national RR, behind old teammate Plaza but ahead of Antón and Valverde. Again he spent the offseason mostly fighting to avoid being lapped by Nys, Albert and Stybar.

Again switching teams due to a lack of stability in Portuguese cycling in the last few years, he ended up at Loulé last year, winning the Vuelta a Asturias after his break was miscalculated. His Volta a Portugal was utterly nondescript. He was slated to join Caja Rural this offseason, but that fell through and he only signed with Miche recently.

He's still a decent rider, but the Tino Zaballa of 2005 is not going to return.

bit of a crosswind 20-30km out, suddenly a bit of a break in the péloton, and you're left with a 5-man breakaway consisting of Stefano Garzelli and four LA-MSS riders, who promptly TTTed in (Garzelli refused to take a turn) to win by about a minute as the chase was disorganized, then Vicioso beat Garzelli in the sprint. That's what set up the all LA-MSS podium in the race, because with that advantage, they just had to gang up on Garzelli on the MTF at Acebo.

I've been talking the Prince down for a while, but will be happy to see him have a better season this year.
If we are going to compare him against the Cunego of 2004 then that is not going to happen again. Even he admits to that. But he has always been a constant attacker. And he is more likely to succed in short races where recuperation is not such a big issue. But as far as his attacking spirit is concern, that has not changed IMHO.

Under the terms of the discussion, Cunego is simply required to win a stage at any race, win a gt stage or 2. Place high in a monument and maybe podium a semi classic.

So not really 2004 heroics.

Hes already ticked off part 1.

Long way for him to go - it's only 20 pts, after all. I figured he'd win again this year, I just didn't see him making a big cq jump. That said, it's a good sign. Maybe some of that explosion he seemed to be missing last year will be back.

Good to see Hermans near the front as well. I'm predicting he'll have a bit of a breakthrough season this year and so far his early season has been pretty good.

He finished top 10 at Criterium International last year, showing some decent legs in the climb in that race. He's not going to win anything big I'd wager, but I think he might get some podiums in smaller events this year.

He may get one here if things work out well, but a 5th-10th finish is probably more likely. Still, not bad for the guy.
