That was the risk... but maybe he could have caught Hesjedal before Hesjedal caught Contador, maybe, but Landa is not a super descender and with tha lastflat part is would be useless to be alone....
It is good to save energy for today, but just if today he is allowed to split everything in the first climb. And I think is not...

The problem for Landa yesterday is that when he caught the group there was little point pushing on on his own (unless he could bridge) as he would have been on his own of descent and final flat or wait for group
