One, almost certain, will be to Cividale del Friuli (medium mountain stage across the hills at the Slovenian border).

That's great news. Could be an awesome stage. An Alpago ITT could be very good, too.

Edit: like this and this in the reverse direction.

They could also use Kolovrat, a HC climb just across the slovenian border.

The most interesting part of the route, for now, is whether they'll go to the western Alps for the third week or not. I would say not.

I want my Fauniera/Sampeyre combo!

Did I mention you can descend from Rifugio Altissimo and then head to Scanuppia within 20km of flat?

I think they should start in India in 2016 and throw in this 550K stage at altitude

I want a stage starting in Borgo Valsugana and Finishing in Alpe di Pampeago.
The climbs (in order): Manghen, Lavaze, Costalunga, San Pellegrino, Valles, Passo Pampeago, Lavaze, Alpe di Pampeago.
Approximately 190km in length, with more than 7000 m of altitude climbing. That may be the craziest sub 200km stage that could be fitted in a GT.

Borgo San Dalmazzo - Briançon would be 198,7km long and feature Madonna del Colletto, Fauniera, Sampeyre, Agnello, Izoard and the short ramp in Briançon, but yeah, your stage would be hellish hard for a sub 200km stage.

My hopes are:

A big stage in the dolomites featuring fedaia and/or giau

A stage in austria (thats not something which would make the race much better but as an austrian I think its normal to hope something like that)

Fauniera-Sampeyre Combination

Zoncolan as a pass (extremely unlikely but it would be sooooo awesome)

Tremalzo isn't that far from being raceable compared to many.

Cà San Marco from the south then a descent finish in Morbegno, per favore. And a tough mountain stage in mid-altitude around Sanremo. And two Valdostan stages. Clone that Torgnon MTF stage from a few years ago in the GDVDA, or maybe a Pila MTF (after Lin Noir?), if it has to be such. Way better final climbs than Cervinia. If MTF is not a necessity, then Aosta descending from Lin Noir after a bunch of climbs would be immense.

Tze Core - Saint Pantaléon from Châtillon - either Champremier or Saint-Bartélemy - [Pila-Les Fleurs?] - Lin Noir - descent finish in Aosta would be absolutely ideal. If it's decided to be too much, can always replace Tze Core (*sob*) with Arlaz. Other options would be to finish at Pré-St-Didier, Morgex or La Thuile after Colle San Carlo (so Verrogne instead of Lin Noir then San Carlo). Even better, perhaps, a short punchy uphill finish in Courmayeur (which is a pretty well known ski town and has money) after San Carlo's descent. Alternatively, the ski facilities at Brusson could host a finish after Tze Core - (Saint Pantaléon from Chambave) - Joux from Châtillon with a very short descent (like the La Thuile stage in 2006).

Rucas MTT from Pinerolo

Monte Matajur (after Madonnina del Domm and Passo Glevizza with a route that doubles back on itself possibly?) is something that we do need to see one day.

Agnello-Izoard-Mongenevre-Finestre-Sestriere would be awesome. Slightly worried about the length though - 238km and 7800m of climbing, but imagine that: for once the riders will be empty before the Finestre. Time gaps could be 4-5 minutes or more.

I really do not like these outside of toured countries starts, or any mid race adventures either. There is plenty of Italy use it all.
