It could still be a good Giro. Gavia is a great climb. In the past it was often combined with Mortirolo, which meant that not much was happening on Gavia, but that could change with the stage to Livigno, where Gavia clearly is the hardest climb of the day.

Fauniera is awesome obviously, and even if the rumored stage is not great it still is very good. A lot will depend how well the stage to Cividale is designed, that one could be great. The first week looks rather uninteresting though. Three rest days sucks, too, as does (of course) the start in the Netherlands.

When will they do Fauniera?

And what could they do on the stage to Cividale?

They wont do Vars - Larche - S. Anna. They will do an extra lap after the larche and go over the Fauniera from its hardest side. At least its rumored to be so.

Farra d'Alpago - Corvara, through S.Pellegrino, Pordoi, Giau and Falzarego. (the route is only guessed by the journalist though). What's more important: saturday, stage 14! With Cividale mentioned as stage 13.

So now what. We could speculate Andalo could be moved on stage 11, coming straight from south, and then moving to Veneto to have an easier finish as stage 12. In any case, there's no room for both Siusi and Livigno anymore, unless one of the two moves to the third week. Considering what I wrote yesterday, I'll drop Siusi completely.

Something like this:

Stage 1 Apeldoorn ITT 8.1 km OFF
Stage 2 Arnhem - Nijmegen 180 km OFF
Stage 3 Nijmegen - Arnhem 190 km OFF
Rest
Stage 4 Catanzaro - ??? ****
Stage 5 ??? - Montevergine MTF *****
Stage 6 Avellino? - Roccaraso ***
Stage 7 Sulmona - Foligno ***
Stage 8 Foligno - Follonica ****
Stage 9 ITT in Tuscany ***
Rest

Stage 11 ??? - Andalo ****
Stage 12 Molveno - Asolo ***
Stage 13 Udine?? - Cividale del Friuli *****
Stage 14 Farra d'Alpago - Corvara ***
Stage 15 Castelrotto?? - Livigno ****
Rest
Stage 16 Livigno - Ghisallo ***
Stage 17 ??? - Monza? **
Stage 18 Muggiò - Pinerolo ****
Stage 19 Pinerolo - Risoul MTF ****
Stage 20 Guillestre - S.Anna di Vinadio MTF ****
Stage 21 Cuneo - Torino ***

Looking at this dolomite stage I think that the organizers only had the goal to needle libertine by not using Fedaia :D
However wasnt it rumored that the andalo stage comes after a stage in Val Gardena and that the stage after andalo goes into lombardia?

Yes, that was even before the Risoul news. Everything's changed now.

Ok. Much better. I guess they will have to loop around to do Fauniera from Pradleves? Seems like a loop of 50-60 km, but still it's much better as long as they include Fauniera.

Fauniera looks great. I dont know too many climbs and the terrain, so the host and finishes doesnt say that much to me.

When will it be revealed? As usual I cant wait.

Local media confirmed the Corvara and the Susi stage today, that's a little bit strange.

The presentation of the stage in London has been moved to Monday 7th. And an emblem has appeared inside the cup of wine. Pretty hard to misunderstand, it's Chianti. That should be the ITT in Tuscany. Seems like they will continue the wine-related tts.

That would be great, but I fear that we'll get St. Anna after Fauniera.

I doubt that stage. The penultimate mountain stage finishes in france and the last one is inside france for probably over 90%? Hard to believe.

Elevation of the col de restefond is lower than that of Agnello, though (As opposed to the cime de la bonette). It is somewhere in the 2600's vs 2744. Normal closure period is from octobre to may (it is located a whole lot more Southern than Stelvio and Gavia, but you never know in the mountains of course.)

Doesn't matter if Bonette or Agnello, the stage will be cancelled or shortened once again. They learned nothing from the previous years.

if what they should learn is that they should never go above 2500m, I hope they'll never learn. The problem I have with this is that they're planning to go over 2500m at least three times.

It is okay to go above 2500m, but maybe not in a way that threatens the whole stage. It is just a big disappointment to see my thrill of anticipation flushed down the toilet again. ;)

But cancelled Giro stages belong to the history of the race. I just saw a profile of what they had planned in 1995. This one was also changed due to snow.

This was planned as stage 15. Stage 14 was Trento - Val Senales via Auna di Sopra, Passo di Pennes, Passo di Monte Giovo. 233k and 7:30h. Total carnage.

And what for a route...

Go big or go home!

I like that. Its a big gamble as people have mentioned, but sometimes, you gotta do something like that. If they indeed plan to do it on three separate occasions (or just on one stage?), they surely will have a plan B you would assume?

three stages... Ofc there would be a plan b for each, but they would be all quite underwhelming.
