Froome has always been very close in these kinds of finishes, not really winning them, but rarely losing time on stuff like this. This is his worst result on a climb like this since his breakthrough.

Froome has even won these kind of finishes. I remember when Froome won the stage to La Planche des Belles Filles in the 2012 Tour on an even tougher finish. Not looking good for him or Sky at this point.

Very nice stage. I wonder how many times Lopez are going to be horrible on these kind of finishes for commentators to understand thats his actual level on stages like this, even in great shape. My favourite for Etna.

Funny to see Froome being this bad. First the prologue, now this. Very slow, but steady decline.. for some reason I think he focused even more on endurance and sustained power this season, thats the vibe Im getting for him. Couple that with a later peak and this is what you get.. I think he will be one of the best in the 3rd week in the mountains, maybe the best, but I definitely don't think he should be considered the favourite anymore. That title belongs to Tom.

Some of the same tomorrow and then Etna. Nice trifecta of stages on Sicilia, good job.

Planche is 5km long climb, not comparable at all, but I agree he's one of the better GC guys in these finales.

Froome never was too convincing on those types of finishes, probably why he dodged the Ardenne classics. But still by his standards it's not good. The big question is if it's his form in general or the result of the crash ? He needs to at least finish with the front group on Etna.

Lol, remember early tour stage of 2016 with finish atop mur de Huy? Froome head and shoulders above the rest bar Purito who won it. Against a fresh field. Same stage Dumo and Cance crashed hard right before the run in.

So it looks like it wasn't so funny.

You would have to be a bit more specific...

Of course, if he really had some troubles in last km.

Lopez was brought to a standstill in that Zeits crash otherwise he would probably have finished with the other GC contenders

Lopez has one of the worst "punches" in the peloton. He wouldn't have finished in the Dumo-Dennis-Pozzo-Pinot group not matter what.

Yeah he had, he wasn't going as fast as others did :p

Wellens looked pretty impressive. I wasn't sure if he would be explosive enough for that finish today. Going with the mini attack in the penultimate km was a good idea, so he didn't have to fight for a good position. For his international recognition this is a great step. He's winning more often than he used to. Moreover he knows now that he can perform in hot weather as well.

I think this was one of his few victories(the only one?) not coming from an attack.

His list of wins is becoming impressive.
