I would love it with Sampeyre and Agnello instead of Maddalena and Vars.
Wouldn't that be insanely long?

But yeah, of the 5 climbs only the Izoard is really hard and that comes in at waaayyy too far.

In fact I'd prefer just Agnello over Maddalena and Vars.

Re: Giro 2019 Route Rumours

Maddalena/Larche has been closed to races for years because of landslides danger

yeah, I wonder if they are actually going to race there. The Cuneo - Pinerolo has been confirmed, but they can always come up with some bull**** and change the route like in 2009.

Also, sorry I haven't posted much in here lately  There are some new rumours but nothing big.

No rumors regarding Tre Cime di Lavaredo? It has been 5 years since they last visited it.
After the first two times, the average interval between visits to Tre Cime is larger than that, unfortunately.

Some more news.

- It is very likely they will make a stage along the lines of the Granfondo Sportful, from Treviso to Feltre. The route should be similar but doesn't have to be exactly the same. Here's the profile:

Sportful_2014_lungo_logo_alt-1024x553.jpg

- Recent news point out at a final stage in Verona like in 2010.
- The Ponte Di Legno stage will likely feature Tonale, Gavia and Mortirolo
- There should be an ITT either in the area of Sondrio or in Franciacorta (old rumour, but recently got back on)
- Couple of stages in Tuscany (one in Orbetello and one in Vinci), should not be anything special though.
- Still no news about the start. Matera pretty much the only Italian candidate.

Manghen + Rolle sounds like a good idea. No matter whether it's an MTF or a descent finish.

Yes, finally the Gavia pass is back. The combination with Tonale and Mortirolo sounds great too.

If only Tre Cime di Lavaredo / Drei Zinnen was back too, now. But one can't get everything.

Isn't it possible as well to combine the Manghen pass with the harder Reiterjoch side of Alpe di Pampeago? Would be the exact opposite direction than the 2008 stage Sella won.

Manghen can be better utilised than Rolle, which from both sides is kind of a drag. I think they did the Manghen and Reiter in 2012 stage won by Kreuziger. I also don't understand this Tre Cime fetish going on in this forum.

Yes... they did it in 2012.

Still following the news about the repetition of the stage between Cuneo and Pinerolo, is your opinion that this will be the only stage covered in the Piedmont region? The previous stage is likely to be a MTF, is it not?

MTF on Rifugio Fraiteve was rumored already more than a year ago, Basset was scheduled to be paved this summer for this stage. Anyway there are also some candidatures in the flat part of the region.

probably not. There should be a finish in Novi Ligure (mostly flat), and maybe another stage in Piemonte (probably after Pinerolo)

By the way, as we are talking about climbs in that area, has Passo Nigra/Nigerpass ever been used in the Giro? That one has some brutal roads leading up there and it connects nicely to some other passes of the region..

Actually it seems it was used once in 1991 in the middle of stage 17, that included Pinei, Fedaia and double Pordoi. Like the whole Giro, it was dominated by Chioccioli and Chiappucci. By "brutal roads" i guess you mean that little murito (up to 22% afaik) between Brie and Tires. There are better climbs in this general area (San Valentino di Sopra/Obergrummer).

Also in1997.

Thanks, i think i found it. At that stage Nigra was uncategorised because it went via nearby Costalunga. That was a very weird stage with 7-8 quite big climbs (Pordoi, Sella, Furcia, Riomolino - a great 5km at 11% murito near Brunico).

The Ponte di Legno stage sounds great. Best rumour by a mile so far. The Cuneo-Pinerolo and Feltre stages are more "meh" IMO. Ok, they are long and have a lot of height meters, but the tougher climbs are so far from the finish, that it makes it less probable that big attacks from the top GC contenders will happen. Espesically a Cuneo-Pinerolo stage with Sestriere as the last climb about 50 kms from Pinerolo.

No more rumours about the Dolomites except the Feltre stage? It's about time they have a proper Dolomite stage again. 5000 height meters and preferably Fedaia or Giau at a desicive point of the stage. And for God's sake; no Oropa finish!

Also hoping for one or two tough Apenninne stages. Not Montevergine or something like that, but Passo Lanciano, San Pellegrino in Alpe or use of the tough Marche climbs. And of course, as always, a proper 220+ km medium mountain stage in the Apennines. The options are many here, but the will to do them doesn't seem to be there.

Can we please see Passo delle Erbe, Alpe di Rodengo, Passo Pennes or Passo di Monte Giovo?

Erbe would be great. Only seen it one time, but remember it as one of the most scenic climbs I've ever seen.

Re: Giro 2019 Route Rumours

There will very likely be a stage finish in Como, with parts of the Lombardia route. Vegni himself confirmed that they are working on it.
It will probably be in the penultimate weekend. Stage 14 or 15.
