I actually agree with some points here but blaming it all on the anglophones is scapegoating at its absolute worst. What you claim is wrong, the agenda to change cycling exists in many countries and is definitely not an anglophone one and broader thinking what you wrote there shows a mindset that only leads a society one way

no, you're right. the sentiment has permeated it's way through the entire sport by this point, but you can't deny that initially it had been led by people who don't fully understand what makes cycling interesting and unique. maybe it's because i can only speak english and can only read articles written in english, but there is a huge campaign out there in the english speaking cycling press to change the traditions and shorten things and mold the sport in their own image that is just as offensive as whatever scapegoating you're accusing me of doing is.

i'll be very happy when Adam Hansen retires. it's always the anglophone riders and writers trying to change this sport. they need to learn that this is not their sport, it belongs to Europe, the Italians and Belgians and French. they're very welcome to participate and make a living but they need to f*ck off trying to change traditions. Lance is on his dumb podcast trying to get grand tours changed to two weeks. Adam Hansen doesn't want to ride 260k, a bunch of British and American journalists write articles about wanting to change the whole calendar around every other week. this sport is meant to be a little bit inhumane, grand tours are absolutely supposed to be inhumane. that's what makes it special. otherwise i could just go down and watch the local group ride do their 50 miles every saturday and sprint for stop signs.

Agreed, it's what drew me to the sport in the first place. Just consult the route of GTs from even the early 80s; multiple sprint stages of 260-300kms. This is on 10kg bikes that were far less aerodynamically efficient. Furthermore, it tips the balance of power. Why do you think it's so hard for Quintana to win the Tour? Those 260km stages in the mid-summer French heat sap his energy.

Surely cycling is changing and "traditions" being altered because there is so much money in the sport now. We haven't got that amateur ideals and principles anymore. Like a lot of sports cycling is the servant of the big money sponsors now.

Personally, I feel that one can't use the word intergiro in relation to a competition that is not based on time.

For those interested in a bet, I feel strongly that the market is wrong on this one. It is priced as though it's highly likely to be a sprint finish, which I think is very unlikely. FDJ will get little or no assistance (why chase to give another win to Demare) and 258km in bad weather is too much for the 5 remaining FDJ domestiques. Also Demare leads Sagan in the points competition so FDJ may well be happy to let the break take the points rather than risk that something goes wrong with Demare and Sagan can close right up in the points comp.

It's a day to spec some really long odds riders. Preferably someone with a big engine on a day the weather could make pretty hard . Sobrero and Cerny two good options.

So yes, I agree it's a boring stage overall but at least the first and last half hour should be ok.

I would argue something completely different, that cycling is actually one of the sports that always, since the beginning, had an explicit professional ethos, which is why it was such a working class sport for the longest time and always followed the whims of the money, sponsors, fans and media.

The only thing that changed is where the money is coming from, which increasingly is not the fans (directly or indirectly), but industrialists and potentates using pro cycling sponsorship as a hobby to improve their image. This imo, is what's hurting the sport.
