Caruso is really flying under the radar. He has been consistently around the 5th-6th best GC rider after The Landissimo crashed out. I can totally see him netting Bahrain a top 5 if all goes well. He is known for his consistency even in the high mountains.

Now seems pretty obvious Giro was Bahrain's prime target this season.
The team's on great form overall. It was just bad luck.

Certainly not over for Remco but he now has to take time in the big mountains not just limit losses for an overall challenge and a podium push begins to look hard given we've seen several of the guys up there do very well in the high stuff.

Really impressed with Vlasov and Carthy (given I think this was horrid for him) today.

Never know what to think about Yates. Sometimes it feels like he causes his own issues with his proclivity for posterior positioning but he did well to stick that out too.

This is the Bernal that I know. Super versatile, powerful, explosive, everything... so glad he's back. I know we still haven't climbed a proper climb yet, but barring crashes, this should be a done deal I think.

What a rider! These accelerations were ridiculous and he was constantly on top of the race at every moment.

Yeah, I was referring to Pogacar mainly, and yes, he wasn't far off, but off he was. I don't see why he would have been ahead today.

Yes but that was RoboBasso with a full preparation under his belt for the race unlike Remco.

Great ride by Bernal and surprisingly great rides by Buchmann and Foss. Vlasov, Caruso, Yates, Carthy all very good as well. Strong domestique work for the Ineos guys, Almeida and LuLe Sanchez. Very good stage. Would have liked it better if the relevant GC riders had battled for the stage win as well, but congrats to Schmid for the victory.

That's how it is in MTB and cyclocross, when you're not confident or good technically... you keep spending energy to close gaps multiple times, and towards the end of the race you're cooked.

That's a pretty big if with lots of hard stages to go and with the preparation he's had. Still he's over achieved so far.

True. He's still in a position for a good result or even a podium but that's if he doesn't lose more time on the climbs coming up which would be a little surprising considering what we've seen so far.

Confidence sure but I'm pretty certain Pogacar or Roglic would have beat him today. I think they're head and shoulders over the other GC contenders tbh.

Like Pogacar did in Strade Bianchi. And we have to clue about Roglic.

Bernie has been too good, although he has attacked on 4 stages so far already with the hardest mountains to come, I wonder if he can sustain it, even Berto/Froome had the capacity to fade.

But when did he race it? 2016-2018.

I'm not claiming Roglic is uber suited to this stage, and I think he wouldn't like an attritional race like this, but that 35th place isn't a superb indicator to me.
