I still put the blame on riders. If basically every statement (by teams as well) indicates that it would not be dangerous, its just a convenience decision by some of the riders...

Multiple quotes from riders saying they wanted to ridee the stage as normal. Vegni said it was a decision not taken by the riders annd with no complaints from riders about the original stage.

"I still blame the riders" lol...

On the Gavia you had the risks of avalances, so there was a legit safety reason.
What they did in 2013 was also reasonable, but this one just lacks common sense.
In the case of the Gavia, the issue was that Vegni had no proper plan B in place. So that's actually three years in a row where he's proven his uselessness, each time with worse consequences than the last. Prepare for multiple stages being gutted next year.

Just for reference. Sometimes it's better to be wrongly wrong 100 times than rightly wrong once...
China ultramarathon: Severe weather kills 21 runners
Those ultramarathon runners unfortunately died in tragic circumstances but I'm sure they'd find some solace in the idea that at least their deaths can be exploited to destroy all sorts of extreme sports and even completely unrelated outdoors sports. Maybe Bernal can try his luck at Wii Sports bowling or something.

That's comparing apples and oranges. The Chinese runners were (at least partially) not properly dressed and equipped, the course was much less accessable to rescuers and there was no convoy of cars, which could have directly supported them.

Also, they just raced Val Martello in 2014. Yeah the descent was controversial, yadayadayada, but they raced the entire stage.
There was probably a lot of pressure to race it because they had already canceled the stage one year earlier.
I also get why ASO shortened the Tignes stage in 2019, when landslides and hailstorms happen during a race you have to react quickly.
