I also think that this stage would have been raced as planned had Vegni not caved to the riders last year. Which highlights the need for his replacement, IMO.

This race is really lacking a mid race TT... if yesterdays stage for example was a TT on that circle route (and maybe some extra kms to make it around 40 or 45km) - now that could set up a great last week - if for example Carthy and Vlasov found their TT legs. As it is now, we know what the pecking order on the climbs. And it does not look that is changing a whole lot...

"We hoped for an improvement in the weather and tried to do the whole stage but looking at the forecasts for the high mountains they could get worse."
"The Passo Giau is still set to be raced in the hope the weather improves during the day."

Wow, Pordoi and Fedaia are cancelled because weather could get worse, but Giau is not cancelled because weather could get better.
What a silly statement.

If only Nairoman was here

He'd say to hell with you Vegni and your bad ass stage changes I'm going over all mountains and I am racing all descents and dont stick no flags in my face . Oh for such devil may care , emotional riding

P.S. This really helps Bernal

Not so much riders who can handle the weather , the long stage and the descents

Move the Giro lol

This is the first time a mountain stage has been altered since 2013. That year they just happened to have ridiculous bad weather and Valmartello was cancelled but Jafferau, Galibier and Tre Cemi (albeit an adapted route) all three were done in the snow.

Last year the Agnello stage was altered because of the French, not because of the weather.

Just swaping giro and vuelta would solve this problem?

I'd imagine Vuelta will run into the same issue with the Pyrenees then in May, and possibly some of their climbs like Valter 2000. They'll have much less of an issue then the Giro though

Gavia was scrapped in 2019 too, so second time actually. In any case, with a competent race director Dolomites stages would very rarely require alteration due to the weather.

Everyone knows that Vegni can be pushed after last year, unfortunately.
If he has access to the same information we have and knows the majority of the riders want to race, their should be no discussion! Its his job!
I cannot grasp the stupidity. Yes, these ride organizations are some pussy organizations, but Vegni is the biggest of him all!
Just fire that idiot already seriously.

I still put the blame on riders. If basically every statement (by teams as well) indicates that it would not be dangerous, its just a convenience decision by some of the riders...

Gavia in 2019.
