Bernal or Arensman have to go on Grappa with 2 polar bears up front for the valley after, they probably won't get a better opportunity all race. Problem is they need seperation.

I don't understand why the two Movistar are attacking, leaving Rubio behind, who could be the biggest beneficiary.

What does polar bear mean?
In the general sense it's someone who appears in an unlikely place. In this context it's a big guy on a mountain stage who otherwise wouldn't be there unless they get in the break, who gets sent ahead to pull their rider in a valley after they attacked from behind.

That figures. Is this a new metaphor invented in this thread today, or is it in a wider that most of us have apparently never come across before.

PS In an attempt to answer my own question, I looked it up on Urban dictionary. I *really* wish I hadn't.

8km at the start at 7.5 per cent, around 7km at the end at 6.5.

But yes, it's a stretch given it's followed by a valley, a climb and then rolling hills to the end.
Yes. If it was another valley after the 6.5 and another 7.5 then it would be a stage for GC :) This is things even a noob has learnt by now so too bad the stage designer didn't know :(
