I'm not so sure about that. It's a large group (so noone has to do a huge effort), and there are some pretty good climbers in there. If they still have 6 minutes or so at the foot of the Fedaia, they have a chance.

You think they will lose 4 minutes on the next 3 climbs? If that's the case they will have a decent shot indeed. I seriously doubt that though.

I really hope nibali attacks on the descent. thats one of the reasons why I support him. Was quite dissapointed when he played safe on the short descent on the grossglockner

I'm concerned Nibali's more likely to wait until the descent of Fedaia, by which time it may be too late and it's mano a mano and he's playing catchup. That's why I said Arroyo first, since he's in the usual Arroyo area in the Giro (10th) but after last year has aspirations to something more, so may be willing to risk it. If he goes, and Nibali goes with him, we could have a race on as two breathtaking descenders could put some time in on the descent of Giau, plus Nibbles would find himself a very useful ally on Fedaia.

However, I don't think this will happen, I'm just hoping out loud.

:( Pozzovivo's climbed off. Once more the CSF leader has had a good early season only for his form to desert him completely when we get to the Giro. And this year it's been a very meek surrender, last year he at least had a tilt at the GPM in the L'Aquila stage.

Pozzovivo has retired.

Part of me thinks it's a shame that he is unable to repeat his 2008 form.

Another more evil part of me is not surprised whatsoever.

Bah. That's a shame.

The thing is, he HAS been able to repeat his 2008 form. But not over 3 weeks. He's been 5th, 3rd and 4th at the Giro del Trentino the last 3 years, top 5 of Castilla y León, won and placed 2nd at Brixia, top 10 of Coppi e Bartali two out of three years, 2nd at the Giro dell'Apennino...

Basically, he's been right up there in all the mountains of the Italian domestic calendar. He crushed everybody on Pampeago last year in Trentino. But he doesn't seem to have it over 3 weeks. In 2008 he may have had "assistance" but even if he didn't, there's a couple of things that were in his favour that aren't anymore:
1) everybody was tiring themselves out chasing his team leader around, so he could quietly get on with doing his thing
2) he wasn't the team leader so he wasn't under pressure to get results.

Btw, today's final climb is another 'support motorbikes only' affair and it even has some gravel roads near the top (unless Zomegnan paved them over).

But of course there are no complaints from the teams as far as I'm aware.

Isn't that literally the last 100 meters? If you have a flat there, it's faster just taking your bike on your shoulder and running to the finish.

True.

I just don't like the idea that only team cars are capable of providing adequate support.
