Ivan Basso, what a beautiful climber, I had almost forgotten.

Cadel Evans, what a fighter! Vino too.

Carlos Sastre, cold as ice as always, just keeping his own pace, never panic.

Richie Porte! It is his first year as a professional, and after mud, rain and hellish mountains he is second in grand classement!

Fantastic race!

Looks like Vino was right in his comments after the stage to L'Aquila in not having made the work for the strongest team and the real contenders. Anyone still betting on the Spaniards? I can hardly see any of them making to the podium.

I think he really tried today. This is just too steep for Nibali.

Oh, and to those saying Basso is doping again: you'd be hard pressed to find a climb more suited to Basso's strengths. This is hardly a surprise.

so who else is clean?

Matthew Goss DNF today, but perhaps surprisingly Greipel is still riding. I guess he might have his eye on Stage 18, but I cannot imagine anyone wanting to chase down a break for him after all the brutal mountain stages before it. Maybe he's just trying to ride himself back into form after getting sick.

Greipel just lacked of his last good punch because of his illness. He lost his speed, but he was always riding quite good before the sprint started. He was always up there with the guys so it's no surprise that he hasn't so much problems with the mountains.
Really frustrating giro for him.

Is Tondo hurt or nursing some ailment? He finished 25'25 seconds behind Basso. Also, Evans is back in the Maglia Rossa. Speaking of Evans, if he manages to win the Giro it will be with one hand tied behind his back. BMC, in a word, are terrible, but you knew this already. The next BMC cyclist after Evans to finish today's stage finished 23'05 seconds behind Basso.

Porte's grip on the white jersey seems insurmountable now. I thought he would lose time today, but now Saxo will marshall their efforts to keep him in White until the end. Mollema needs to make up 12 minutes in 6 stages in order to pass him. It's possible, but difficult.

Perhaps he noticed early on he wouldn't be able to keep his top GC spot, and then figured "autobus + rest day and I'll be good to go for week 3 to help Sastre"?

Maybe a little of A and a little of B? Cervelo's Update states that he is fighting an infection, he was on antibiotics, and this is also his first Grand Tour so fatigue is starting to set in. Hope the rest day can help him recover somewhat.

Not trying to nitpick, but he did ride the Vuelta last year. He crashed in an early stage, couldn't ride effectivel and abandoned after 2 weeks

Ah, see I glossed over a sentence in the link. The sentence is '…it is his first grand tour that he is going to finish'. I stopped at first grand tour.

And why approach this slightly apologetically? If something is wrong people should be able to point out where the error lies. I'm not offended for being told I'm wrong.
