I don't know for sure, but several official team twitter feeds are aware, don't know if that translates to the guys in the cars.

Well even if they know.
It's questionable if it would do any good to tell the riders. Maybe it's better to let them finish the race, and not be distracted, and not risk to break their concentration, those weren't the safest roads.

Well, congrats to Vicioso.

The far more important work is still going on, however. My thoughts are entirely with Wouter Weylandt and his family.

Also, very good to hear the Giro has cancelled the podium ceremony. This is not a time for celebration.

In RAI the commentators don't know how to react. They have images that it's hard to digest and won't (naturally) show them

In the accident site they don't yet know if the heli is giong to land a little bit further or if they throw a device to bring him up as the heli is in the air.

My sentiments as well.

In high school football games (american) there is always an ambulance present at games. Same with basketball. Is there any sort of emergency vehicle that follows the races?

Universal sports saying that riders had no idea of the nature of the crash. Tyler F was Weyland's training partner (despite being on different teams), and commentator reporting that Tyler had no idea until being told after the race. No word on condition of Weyland or cause of crash.

Man, this is bad. Still hoping for some good news.

Just read on twitter that they got his heart started again. Lets hope it's true that means he's got a good chance to get through this.

RT @bdanza: Italian media: Leopard Trek rider Wouter Weylandt was intubated and taken to the hospital, they also report that he still had a pulse.

Not only one ambulance. They have something like 2-3 following and all the hospitals in the area stand-by.

Wouter will be carried out in ambulance as it seems, the helicopter couldn't land. Maybe he will be transfered to it later so they carry him to Genoa.
