Amazing that Porte could not hold the wheels.
Really, not just a bad day for Porte, no way will he win this Giro.

He was never going to win it. This is just bad luck combined with a surprising lack of attention to details from Sky.

I count 48 seconds for Porte.

46. It's the time for the lead guy in the group, not for Richie
And a gap ahead of Contador may be given

The peloton came in ~15 seconds down, so about half a minute for Porte.

No, Porte came in ~1'04 down. I think the peloton came in 18-19 seconds down.
If they somehow (why idk?) decide to create a gap inside the peloton, it may be more like 30seconds

Ah, my bad. Doesn't look good for Porte.

A big  at the sprinters' team. They knew they weren't going to catch the break yet kept drilling at the front. I very much doutbt they didn't know about Porte.

edit: wasn't it a mechanical for Porte?
Don't forget that teams like Trek has nothing else to do than secure the points jersey (For Nizzolo) in this Giro. They had an incentive to make a leadout for him. Bad luck for Porte but you cannot blame the peloton for keeping the pace high. Atleast it wasn't Astana or Tinkoff-Saxo that went on the front

Well, no one starts a lead out that far away from the line - what was it, 5 kilometers? Not to mention Trek only came in strong in the finishing straight. I'll have to rewatch it, but at the moment I don't think there's any excuse for the sprinters' teams brain fart here. So much for the fair play.

Was the mechanical shown on tv? Did anything else happen? I missed it. Last time I saw the break still looked manageable (around 1'40" at 15 K or something) then when I came back just around the time Marangoni went the peloton seemed to be broken down, Porte passed a lot of riders it seemed

Hopefully this mechanical wont decide the Giro.

Also apparently none of you understand quite how drafting cars work. Porte was fine.

We know how drafting cars works. We also saw people going around Porte easily to close the gap when he couldn't. And we also didn't see Porte taking a single pull when he's supposed to have the biggest engine on the team

It was just terrible drafting tactics. The best place to be is right behind the car, not 4th in the line. You see all the time leaders drafting right behind a car and domestiques who were comming back to help get immediately dropped because its impossible to keep pace if you're not within 1 or 2 wheels of the rear end of the vehichle. But Sky did it the wrong way around.

favorites lose 18 seconds and porte 1:05. this is an amazing day.

Nice to see you celebrating your favourite cyclist's rivals' bad luck. Hope you're equally happy when Contador gets his piece of bad luck

why instead of changing the tires, one teammate offers his bike. No way they can comeback from a 25 secs down inside 5k

Then answer these two questions:
- Why didn't Porte take a single pull before they got to the cars
- How could that Orica guy go around Porte - easily - when Porte lost the wheel?

ahh...I came a little late...just seen Porte away from bunch, what happened?

No confirmation yet. Sky will say it's a mechanical whether it was or not, so we'll have to await others sources.
Whatever the case, when his team dropped back to pace him they were dropping him again and he had to signal them to slow down.
I dont understand that :D , he has been dropped or what?

No, he had a mechanical.
Thanks :)
