Goss' wins = Cav to Sky

A few weeks ago EBH answered questions from the readers of procycling.no and I asked a question about if he thinks that Cavendish will come to Sky next year and what that would mean for EBHs role on the team. His reply was:

EBH: There are many speculations about whether he's coming or not. I don't have any inside information och I'm just as curious myself. I really don't think he'll come but it still wouldn't surprise me if he did come. He's british and the team is british. He is a very good sprinter. For me it would mean that I would be more of a lead out and that I would be riding for him in many races. I like him as a person and he's a good man. I don't have any problems working for him. I'll take it as it comes and then we'll see.

Wow, I can almost smell is excitment just with the thougth of such a venture.

@teamskyfans: I doubt Cav would join under those conditions. He would want a train*. Rogers, Martin, men with GC aspirations working like hell for him in flat stges at htc? It speaks volumes about the Cav effect: sucks the life out of the team any race their in. Marketing wise I think it would be great. As a fan of the sport, no. Rather see sky making the progression I think their making. (yes, the results are the same, but there's a change in atitude already and a possible change of outcome with the adition of rogers and uran)

Let's not forget as Cav gets older and has more GT stages than he knows what to do with, then he will want to target true Classics - and Sky will be a really good classics team by then, if not already.

Dim - I am quite surprised that you would rather see EBH coming second or third and Hendo not being able to hold Geraint's wheel at Sky than Cav. He will be looking at his results in the last year when he showed he could win without a train and looking at the ability of a short Sky train and it is all very doable while having some GC pretensions.

Cav in a Sky jersey would be huuuuuuuuuuge for the profile of cycling in the UK.

And he's a cheeky scally who's good for quotable drivel and random PR nightmare moments. EBH - I dont know a thing about him, except he is not delivering on his potential yet.

While i agree that it makes commercial sense for "britains" pro team to sign the british worlds best sprinter, I personally hope it doesnt happen, it would distrupt the squad too much and we would risk losing EBH, Henderson etc.

However, If cavendish did go to sky I think it unlikely that they would base the team around him and provide him with a sprint train.

Sky have already shown in other races this season what their approach is, and they are showing it again in Paris Nice, focus on GC, put a two man sprint team in place, and have other riders lose time early for possible stage wins later in the race (Uran).

The two man team has worked for them before, Hendo and Downing last year, Downing and Appollonio this year, along with Thomas and Henderson. And its worked just fine for some past riders, McEwan springs to mind, when did he ever have a train. If cav does go to sky I hope he doesnt think he will get more than one or two leadout men.

+1 except that I hope he goes to Sky.

More worried about Swift's reaction than Henderson's. Greg'll have had two years as the No1 sprinter for a good PT Team and that is ample reward at his age and level of talent.

I really can't see this going the way of Griepel, nor Cav leaving. The saying is "when you're onto a good thing, stick to it" and I think Cav know's he's onto a good thing at hTC.

As for Sky, I'm keen to see Swift develop and possibly live up to his name over the next few seasons. I can't see them completely changing tact in terms of the direction they're heading at the moment...

well they dont have a team capable of helping climbers or gc contenders win so they must be good at something.

Don't forget there are other players in the market. Its my understanding that Goss is in the final year of his contract and the latest incarnation of the Australian Pro Team will almost certainly be interested in any home grown talent on the market. If the past is any indication HTC will side with Cavendish as long as he continues to provide stage wins in GTs.

Ya, and no matter if it's Goss or Cavendish that leaves it will be interesting to see them sprinting against each other given what Cavendish has said about Goss.

HTC no longer have the leadout train monopoly - both Sky and Garmin can leadout good enough for Cav to win. Def Leopard are looking good already too.

This is great for exciting racing.

I think Sky make Cav the offer he can't refuse - they can lead him out on Champs Elysses and the average Brit will assume Cav won the Tour. Simples.

Frankly, Burgos Monumental and LA-Antarte-Rota dos Móveis can leadout good enough for Cav to win.

That would make for more exciting racing than him going to Sky or Garmin ever could, because sprint stages are at their most interesting when it's disorganised and the sprinters all have to fend for themselves. Cav has shown many a time he's pretty useful at this too.

Well, I believe he has stated that he also wanted more opportunities to ride for himself. He is also a good friend with Löfkvist who was having issues with having to work for Cavendish while riding for GC in the Giro and he was also left off the Tour squad because they needed more riders to help Cav rather than riders going for their own chances on GC so I imagine that they discussed this a bit and decided to leave together.

Do you follow football at all? Every time a big name player transfers it's all about opportunity and ambition, according to the player, never about the money. But everyone knows it's all about the money.

This isn't a criticism. I think it's what they should do (within reason).
