... “Battleground” (1949) tells the story of US paratroopers caught by bad weather in the Nazi’s swansong WWII offensive in the Ardennes. The battle of the bulge, December, 1944. US Gen. Mcauliffe is reported to have answered the German ultimatum for surrender with “Nuts.” The film centers on a platoon and is ripe with human and military aspects of war. A simple “Mama” uttered by newbie, as his dying hand claws the snow, hits us in the guts! A frozen-dead soldier who had until that day never seen snow. The old local woman scraping the trash can. War! Gritty and artful and sad. Great scenes, a great cast and many of the “*******s” in the film are actual Bastogne *******s. Please, if you haven’t, see this film! Or else …
