ROFL - it was terrific, wasn't it? Schlanger and Gogo get my vote - love both of them.

will10 - I can't stand Ligget. If I'm forced to stream Versus (like during Tdf) I use their video and stream a different audio. I just cannot listen to Versus.

Hardly look at Universal Sport but they have caught my attention. Are they americans?

It's Steve Schlanger and Todd "GoGo" Gogulski. Both Americans. Gogo was a racer himself and they're just fantastic together, just IMO, of course. They are not biased, they are funny and informative. Gogo talks daily to racers and directors so he has a nice inside scoop. They have very good timing together.

I'm a woman, so I'll admit it - Schlanger is cute. I also love his voice.

I watch them even on the most dullest of flat stages because they make the race interesting no matter what.

Here's another fun series of clips from Steve & Todd: http://www.youtube.com/user/sportsnetwork#p/u/12/IW_yA9L6KSM (all the crashes of Stage 5)

Yes, it was a positive surprise. Being from Europe myself i seldom hook up whats going on with american commentary. Having listened to Liggett/Sherwin too many hours i was pretty much, as a fan of Contador, afraid of what the yankees would sound like, given that these brits actually complains when he is going on the offensive.

It is always good when these kinds of prejudices turns out to be wrong.

Too me they sounded positive, entusiastic, passionate. As it should be.

Yep. I saw them during stage 7 and that made me kind a like them. Of course, not in a he-is-cute-kind of way, but nevertheless :D

*Digging this up with a few pearls from stage 20*

(Talking about the break and who's in it)
"Popovych, of course."

(As the riders are heading straigt for the mountains)
"And now there's no avoiding the mountains"
"Well, not unless you make a 180 degree turn..."

(About cathing, or rather not catching Kiryienka)
"Now they have to start pulling in on him, otherwise they won't catch him"
"If they don't start pulling in on him they definitely won't catch him"

This needs to be revived!

(Ok. I'll do this a little different. You have to guess who this quote is about! And Danes; no guessing for you! For obvious reasons I've had to translate it!)

R. Sørensen: He's an absolute fruitcake.

Well, Phil today twice called Yohann Gène "colored." Exact quote "The first colored rider in the Tour de France"...twice...if you had a question about whether or not he is an idiot, I think the question has been definitively answered.

It's an old fashioned term in Britain, but it doesn't carry quite the same connotations it does in the US. I hold no brief for Liggett, but it's worth pointing that out before he's tarred and feathered.

What's he supposed to call him instead?
African-American?
As Zinoviev Letter said, coloured isn't quite that shunned a term in Europe as it apparently is in the US.

Well, the usual term in UK English is black. It's a bit old-fashioned to describe someone as coloured, but it doesn't carry the same vaguely racist air that it does in the US.

I caught the Twitter-rage (courtesy of NYVC and BSNY) but missed the actual comment, despite watching live.

Leaving aside whether 'coloured' is to be considered racist or not (I'm English, so the correct answer is 'not') was he correct? I can't believe that it's taken until 2011 for the first non-white rider to take to the course.

Actually my first thought when hearing this Danish commentators called him coloured as well was basically "Eeeh. What about Beppu and Arashiro?" I might be wrong but isn't Asian "non-white" as well?

It's true that cycling is a very white sport (well, mostly it's a very European sport, except for some people from Central Asia who've been successful too and would probably "pass" as white to most people, Vino or Abdu for example), but that's not quite accurate. There has been the occasional African cyclist in the Tour de France pretty much since the start - http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Neffati
I'm sure racism played some part, but mostly it's cultural, which sports people from certain countries are most focused on.

I find it funny that you guys are attacking a Brit who said "coloured" for his cultural insensitiveness, all while being insensitive about the cultural and linguistic differences between the US and Britain.
