I would have thought that a rider simply gets "deleted" from the classification and the points are not recounted.

Not officially but its fun to speculate .

Wouldn't Contadors ban put Andy Schleck into the polka dot jersey as well (for the 2011 Tour) ?

He only needed 10 more points...

Contador only beat schleck up 1 mountain- alpe and i don't think it would have been 10 points. good one though.

Oh I get what your saying. Do they recount all that stuff again?

No, it's just like how they don't award points for wearing the leader's jersey to the guy who was second. They don't revise the micro stuff, even if it would have been a completely different race without the removed rider (see: Evans winning 2007 Tour without Contador having Rasmussen to pace him up climbs). They just remove the guy and shuffle the standings. That's why it's such an odious business.

That's why I'm, a bit to my shock and his, in agreement with Pistolet on the Valverde case, and think he shouldn't be back until May. And as a result, I kind of have to follow that with Contador. Ban him for two years, but don't give us this backdating nonsense. Two years on the shelf, he keeps every result in the interim but it gets an asterisk next to it. He'll have been tested every day in the leader's jersey of those WT races and came back clean, so why remove it? I mean, Davide Rebellin still won 2009 Flèche Wallonne, why was his ban not backdated and his interim results removed the same?

This re-allocation of results is such a messy game because it totally redesigns the rankings and affects which teams could or would have got licences, and that can affect budgets and whether teams collapse or stay on or whether sponsors stay. All on some fictitious race result where we have to imagine somebody disappeared. It was confusing enough with Valverde, but at least all that was done in 2010, and the ranking points were re-allocated in time to do the licences for 2011.

With all the erasing of results this is like a modern day version of 1984. We all saw Contador win on Mt Etna, but there is now no record of that happening according to the UCI.

Throw away the Record Books

I'd say the worst part of all of this is that you can't just scratch out AC's name and slide everyone up one position. His presence completely changed the dynamic of each one of those races.

Without Contador at the Giro, Nibali crosses another GT off his list. The only reason Scarponi takes second last year is that Nibali put it all on the line to try to take back time on AC. Without that deficit he's sitting on Scarponi's wheel calm, cool and collected AND THEN bombing the descents.

Who knows how any of these races turn out. I understand innocent until proven guilty in a court of law but in the Court of Arbitration of Sport speed up the process and no racing until your case has been resolved. The negative impact on the sport wouldnt be nearly as bad if you're removing a few months of results as compared to 18....

i won't be so dramatic, i got used to it in cycling;)...the real tragedy is:tondo, soler, pantani, poor weylandt and so on.the no justice drama: pantani at madona di campiglio, rasmussen thrown out like he was garbage by the hypocrites from rabobank.they didn't reach out the final podium, huge huge injustice...

as for heras 2005,floyd 2006,valverde's wins in 2010,rebellin in 2009 and now contador 2010-2011 they won the whole thing on the road,i saw the race,i don't care about what wikipedia says.simple as that.i'd have paid my money to see vino racing for almost two years and then uci take all the results away,at least you see him racing.that's all that matters for me.the road not the labs or the politics.

I'll definitely agree with you there. I more meant the worst part of AC's doping situation.

But no, I don't want to see dopers win races. I want to see clean results from riders on a level field. Cycling is dramatic by nature. I don't think a .5mph difference over the course of a Grand Tour with clean riders vs. doped will make that race any less dramatic.

An exciting rider will bury himself to win with or without elevated testosterone and red blood cell counts

Yeah, I guess in that 1997 Tour De France Udo Bolts was just becoming delusional from dehydration, since he was screaming out "Quäl dich, du Sau!" to his own shadow
