It is smart,but dangerous too;)

It's super smart... if he doesn't pick up an injury.

Maybe he secretly want's to find another set of classics where he can podium without winning in years to come? :D

He might be concerned that his team aren't that strong on cobbles for the Tour, and thus it's extra important that he himself can navigate in business end of the peloton.

How many teams are better than Movistar?

.. So valverde seemed to have enjoyed his Belgian Cobble race baptism today, to the point he's going for E3 Harelbeke this Friday!!

as I ask today around- could he became a One day-Belgian race rider in the coming years?:D

Don't worry. He'll just collect a few 2nd and 3rd places. :D

well- you tell me how many Belgians would die for podium spots in their own races ;)

I have this hunch of him giving up the Tour dream & dedicate himself to be a pure versatile all-terrain rider -like the ones from the past & close his career with a RVV tittle :D

Is he really going for E3? I think GW would suit him better.
Great performance today, hope he will do fine at Tdf stage 5:)

Neither his team manager nor his sponsor give a dumb about Belgian races. Spanish teams are all about the Tour and the Vuelta. Just look where Freire or Flecha spent most of their careers.

Some of the guys Movistar has sent in the past to those races (Rojas, Lastras, Erviti) have tried to get him to ride RVV with no success so far. He's gone to Dwars and will do E3 just because the Tour has cobbles this year and his team thinks those races not too demanding or risky to compromise his chances for his big season goals. But I'm with you and his teammates that it's a pity he ignores RVV.

Man say what you like about this guy but imho opinion he is a super talent i no hard to judge but i believe Valverde is up their in any era, clean or Dirty. He is just so strong he not really best at anything but turning into a great all rounder exept ITT. I genuinely believe he could win the Ronde he is that sort of rider. He as also underacheieved imo(some will find that laughable) but im sure some agree he could have won alot more He should have no regrets though his carear is great.

I always thought that guys like Evans or Vinokourov would have a chance in Flanders but they always found it too risky to give it a serious try. Hell even Frank Schleck once talked about Flanders :D
I would respect that Valverde used the twilight of his career to ride some of the cobbles, it would be really cool. But it's not in his DNA I guess and that's also fine.

It would be cool if more GC guys would take a crack at the cobbled races. Would be like bike in the day where the guys winning GC's in GT's like Merckx or Hinault would also target and participate in the cobbled races.

Kudos to Valverde for giving them a try.

As posted in the race thread:

E3 >>>>>> Dwars

Allthough I agree that E3 is a lot harder and that I didn't expect Valverde to win the E3 I do get the feeling he couldn't really be arsed anymore after the big crash. His season doesn't depend on these races like Cancellara.

Too bad we will never know.
